Just Go With It

What it's about:

Danny (Adam Sandler), a wealthy plastic surgeon, has developed a dating MO that has had surprisingly good results. He pretends to be a married man who is abused by his non-existent wife. When he meets Palmer (Brooklyn Decker), he drops the act because he thinks she's 'the one'. However, when she finds his handy prop - a wedding band - Danny has some explaining to do. He ropes in his assistant Katherine (Jennifer Aniston) to play his "ex-wife" and her kids play along to form one big fake happy family. An impromptu trip to Hawaii forces everyone to dial up their acting skills and figure out their feelings.

What we thought:

This movie title is a metaphor for the way most mediocre movies get made: As long as there's some slapstick comedy, big names and boobs, there's no reason not to just go with it. It's a guaranteed cash cow.

Sadly, most people standing in line at the cinema will be thinking along the same line: The movie offers a lot of visual stimulation in exchange for very little mental input, so why not just go with it?

Not that there's anything wrong with making a movie with slapstick, stars and boobs - as long as you do it decently.

Sandler's formula is fast becoming stale, and instead of pulling up his socks he's resting on his shaky laurels.

There's not really much to say about Sandler's performance because he plays the same jerk he did in Click, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and just about every movie he's been in. His characters seem to be losing that "adorable asshole" quality, though. In a particular scene with the kids Danny manages to put his feelings before a child missing his absent father. A winning character indeed. Perhaps Sandler should replace Charlie in Two and A Half Men.

Just Go With It is mildly entertaining, but it's insulting. Watching Supermodel Brooklyn Decker trying to act is cringeworthy! I wonder how she feels being upstaged by an 11-year-old?

Bailee Madison, who plays Katherine's daughter Maggie, is outstanding as the rambunctious actress in training who's got her English accent just about down-pat.

And then there's Jennifer Aniston. She too is guilty of flogging the same old character - give or take a few kids - over and over. It's all rather unremarkable, except for her visual transformation. When Danny pays to have his medical assistant turned into a Real Housewife of Orange County, it's a fantastic and hilarious sight to witness.

The film's only other redeeming quality is Nicole Kidman's animated performance as Katherine's psycho college roommate Devlin.

Just Go With It is simply a tits 'n ass fest with a well-known cast.
