Mean Creek

2006-03-30 13:10

It all begins in a small Oregon town, when shy Sam (Rory Culkin) confesses to his protective older brother Rocky (Trevor Morgan) that he is getting pummelled daily by the towering school bully George (Joshua Peck). Together, they plan the perfect payback, inviting George on a birthday river trip tailor-made to end in the bully's humiliation. Rocky's pals Clyde and Marty (Ryan Kelley, Scott Mechlowicz) and Sam's budding girlfriend Millie (Carly Schroeder) also join the journey.

As soon as the trip begins Sam is gripped by misgivings. Seeing George in a new light, as a lonely kid desperate for friendship and attention, Sam wants to call the whole thing off. But the boat and the plot are already in motion, and no one can foresee the tragedy that is to come.

What the critics are saying:

"Revenge is anything but sweet in Mean Creek, a haunting morality tale from debut writer/director Jacob Aaron Estes."
- Matthew Leyland, BBCi Film

"It could have been simple-minded and predictable, but it becomes a rare film about moral choices, about the difficulty of standing up against pressure from your crowd."
- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

"Estes and his cinematographer, Sharone Meir, present a vision of paradise and innocence lost in this beautifully understated drama."
- Lou Lumenick, New York Post

An absorbing morality fable about a group of kids who plan to teach the local bully a lesson - not realising their game will end in tragedy.
