Spider is set in the East End of London in the 1960s and 1980's. A deeply disturbed boy, Spider (Bradley Hall), 'sees' his father brutally murder his mother and replace her with a prostitute, Yvonne (Miranda Richardson). Convinced they plan to murder him next, Spider hatches an insane plan, which he carries through to tragic effect.

Years later, Spider (Ralph Fiennes) is released into a halfway house, where he receives little care or attention from the landlady Mrs. Wilkinson (Lynn Redgrave). Unsupervised, Spider stops taking his medication and starts revisiting his childhood haunts.

His attempts to sustain his delusional account of his past begin to unravel and Spider spirals into fresh madness.

What the critics are saying:

"Spider is dour, thoughtful, and oppressive. It's an experience that bores into your brain, but occasionally just bores."
- Nev Pierce, BBCi

"If you have the patience, its almost endless silences and extremely slow pacing eventually pay off."
- Jonathan Foreman, New York Post

"...something very close to a masterstroke, as truthful and affecting a depiction of mental illness as ever put to film."
- Peter Howell, Toronto Star

Ralph Fiennes stars as Dennis 'Spider' Cleg, a deeply disturbed man struggling to come to terms with his illness and his past.

Hands of Stone

Hands of Stone is a bland, unlikable portrayal of a real-life boxer that struggles to hit the highs of Rocky IV let alone Raging Bull or the original Rocky. Mark this one down as “for boxing fanatics only”. Read More »
