Surf's Up

What it's about:

Young Cody (voiced by Shia LaBeouf) dreams of leaving his home in Antarctica and becoming a legendary surfer, having been inspired by surfing legend Big Z. He gets his chance when he enters the "Big Z Memorial Surf Off" on the tropical Pen Gu Island, but he faces fierce competition from the reigning champion Tank Evans. Beaten and humiliated, he gives up, but finds inspiration in the form of a mysterious teacher.

What we thought of it:

Surf's Up is a sad reminder of the poor quality of recent children's films and how far Hollywood has sunk in the stakes of writing vs. flash. That's not to say that Surf's Up is a bad movie, because it isn't. It's a visually stunning, well paced sports comedy with enough decent jokes to keep you chuckling from start to finish, so what's the problem? It's one of the most generic underdog-makes-good story imaginable.

By virtue of the fact that it contains likeable and amusing characters and jokes that aren't signposted a mile away, it stands head and shoulders above garbage like Over the Hedge. Cody is an underdog you can really root for, and Shia LaBeouf is his usual luckless chump with enough charm to win your heart over. He makes the journey from zero to hero without ever becoming irritating, which is an especially big plus for parents watching these sorts of films.

Basically there isn't much to say about Surf's Up because you've seen this many times before, except perhaps not with animated penguins (they're the new "it" animal apparently). It's light hearted and fun and kids should love it. The animation is great, the voice actors do a good job, and this is humourous entertainment for young and old alike. A perfect holiday film for the young 'uns.

SURF'S UP Don't you think a child should review this movie rather than an adult? The kids all love these movies....

Enjoyable I agree with tanya. It is a kids film, while i thought it was enjoyable, my little sister absolutely loved it,and could't stop quoting lines.

Just another typical Tom Cruise action film, with nothing to get too excited about. The film is loaded with action-film stereotypes and cheesy one-liners. Read More »

Hands of Stone

Hands of Stone is a bland, unlikable portrayal of a real-life boxer that struggles to hit the highs of Rocky IV let alone Raging Bull or the original Rocky. Mark this one down as “for boxing fanatics only”. Read More »
