"While the film is relatively faithful to the original novel, many details have been altered. Director Mark Herman keeps it simple, omitting many elements, while making Bruno's innocence the central focus. The process of discovery by the reader as Bruno begins to learn more about the real world is lost in the film adaptation, making it more difficult for the viewer to relate to Bruno. Although the simple storytelling works, it could have included many more details."
