What it's about:

In a matter of minutes, episodes of strange, chilling deaths that defy reason and boggle the mind erupt in major American cities. Philadelphia high school science teacher Elliot Moore (Mark Wahlberg) tries to find a way to escape the mysterious and deadly phenomenon. Though he and his wife Alma (Zooey Deschanel) are in the midst of a marital crisis, they hit the road, first by train, then by car, with Elliot's math teacher friend Julian (John Leguizamo) and his 8 year-old daughter Jess (Ashlyn Sanchez), hoping to escape the reach of the grisly, ever-growing attacks. Yet it soon becomes clear that no one – and nowhere – is safe.

What the critics say:

"A patchy, uninspired eco-thriller whose R rating (a first for Shyamalan) looks more like a B.O. hindrance than an artistic boon."
Justin Chang , Variety

"Shyamalan's such an eager recycler, grinding out the same ideas and images again and again. The man who showed such promise less than a decade ago has been leaving a diminishing creative footprint ever since."
Mary Elizabeth Williams , Salon.com

"We don't care. It doesn't matter if they live or die, if there's a happy ending, or some kind of twist. The Happening is a movie to walk out of, sleep through, or - best of all - not to bother with."
James Berardinelli , ReelViews

"The Happening is a divertingly goofy thriller with an animistic bent, moments of shivery and twitchy suspense and a solid lead performance from Mark Wahlberg."
Manohla Dargis, New York Times

"The movie demonstrates a smart movie geek's obsession with the rhythms and gory details of horror storytelling, undermined by a pompous insistence on spiritual lessons of the tritest kind. "
Lisa Schwarzbaum , Entertainment Weekly

"The movie seems more like a '50s science fiction film of extreme paranoia or an episode of The Twilight Zone that even at a swiftly paced 90 minutes feels padded. "
Kirk Honeycutt , Hollywood Reporter
A family is on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity.

The happening... never happen There was no 'happenning' in this movie. Awful from beginning to end. It doesn't even have the usual but predictable Shyamalan twists that he is so famous for. Perhaps he watched a couple of episodes of Robot Chicken and concluded that the twist is that there would be no twist! Don't waste your money on this plonker of a movie...

Nothing happened Honestly speaking this is the first time I walked out of the cinema and did not really understand why someone would make a movie like that. Nothing happened, literaly. The movie is just baseless. The only thing that they managed to do is to leave you with expactations an question marks. Dont watch it, it is a flop.

C'mon, it's good It makes a different, it tells a world end through a character's eyes. The focus is not the characters but what it looks like when the world end. It doesn't really need a story. It's kind of like looking at a fish tank and learning about how the fish live. Stop listening to people who always demand the same formula from movies. This is a good piece of work.
