What it's about:
Six friends are trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear the friendships inside apart.
Eventually, everyone is forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.
What we thought:
If you think Seth Rogen and co, acting as themselves in a Revelations movie will give you an insight to their real selves, don’t be fooled. This comedy troupe play exactly into the personas that tabloids and paparazzi have given them, making a complete mockery of what a ‘celebrity’ is – and it’s absolutely fantastic.
It’s hard to think that they could come up with something more ridiculous than Your Highness, but somehow This is the End has gone beyond it into a realm where your nightmares make you laugh. But behind all the vulgar comedy, inappropriate sex jokes, lots of drug taking and apocalypse beasties, the movie does have a strong message about the dangers of ego in a world where image is everything.
Seth Rogen and James Franco clearly have lots of famous friends, as the cameos are endless at the ‘end of the world’ party, but the ones to look out for are Rihanna, Michael Cena and Emma Watson. Cena goes against his typecast in a huge way, Rihanna gives him the biggest bitch slap and Emma Watson looks pretty badass with a baseball bat.
Although, the movie has got some deeper moments. The dynamic between Seth Rogen and his Canadian friend Jay Baruchel (How To Train Your Dragon) is well played out, ranging from best buds to feelings of betrayal to making up, and is an awesome portrayal of the power of a bromance. You should never be scared to tell your best friend you love them.
The apocalypse events actually closely follows the Revelations chapter from the Bible, although completely exaggerated, but that is the point of the movie. As the events are exaggerated, the actors playing themselves also exaggerate their public personas while retaining elements of truth. You can keep your dramas and bios about the fallacy of the celebrity lifestyle. This is the End is one of the best critiques out there. If you can stomach the un-PC humour.
If you love the Seth Rogen comedy genre and want to see Michael Cena get impaled, definitely watch this bizarro fest. If you are super sensitive, conservative, church-going or in any slight way a prude, just don’t. You will be bitching about its blasphemy on social media afterwards.
