What it's about:

Through hope, determination, sacrifice and the drive to protect families and communities, the Granite Mountain Hotshots become one of the most elite firefighting teams in the country. While most people run from danger, they run toward it - watching over lives, homes and everything people hold dear, forging a unique brotherhood that comes into focus with one fateful fire in Yarnell, Arizona.

What we thought:

As award season draws ever closer I find myself watching more and more really good films. Only the Brave is one of those.

Starring Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges and Jennifer Connelly the film is based on a GQ article written by Sean Flynn about the real-life firefighting crew named the Granite Mountain Hotshots.

I knew very little about the story and the devastating Yarnell Hill Fire that took place in Arizona during late June of 2013. Once you realise what’s unfolding on the screen is based on true events you can’t help but be shaken to the core.

Director Joseph Kosinski handles the subject matter with a lot of grace and sensitivity without compromising the seriousness of the reality that transpired. This comes in sharp contrast with themes like masculinity and brotherhood that form the base of the story.

Kosinski starts the story far away from the June 2013 events. This gives the audience the chance to truly understand the characters, their frame of mind and their devotion to their jobs. It also highlights the immense pressure families and loved ones go through when their friend, brother or husband puts their life on the line in a high risk job. The truly talented cast does an astounding job at authentically portraying these men on screen.

Only the Brave has no bells and whistles or unnecessary cinematic embellishments. It tells a true story through breath-taking cinematography, an extremely well-written script and a dedicated and talented cast. Everyone from your cinematic connoisseur to your average movie fan will appreciate this film. It truly is worth watching and deserves all praise that comes its way.
