The 2013 awards season kicked off this week with the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards, but this was just the first of many glittering red carpet events that lie ahead. Here are the Top 5 awards shows to catch this season.
-
1. The 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) - 27 January: This award show, that was launched in 1995, has quickly become one of the entertainment industry's top achievement honours. Last year's winners included the cast of The Help. Front runners for 2013 are rumoured to be Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper for their roles in the comedy Silver Linings Playbook.
-
2.The 55th Annual Grammy Awards - 10 February: Known as the cremè de la cremè of the music awards, the Grammys is the most celebrated event in the music industry. After walking away with a couple of awards last year, will Taylor Swift be able to continue her run in 2013?
-
3. The 2013 British Academy Film Awards - 10 February: The British alternative to the Oscars. While the BAFTAs naturally focus more on British films, it also showcases talent from other countries. Meryl Streep managed to palm a BAFTA for Leading Actress last year, and Jessica Chastain is said to be the favourite to win the award this year.
-
4. The 2013 Film Independent Spirit Awards - 23 February: The Spirit Awards brings together the best in independent films. Awards handed out tend to recognise films that aren't usually mainstream favourites, but strive for excellence in film-making. Quvenzhané Wallis from Beasts of The Southern Wild is said to be a favourite at the awards this year.
-
5. The 85th Academy Awards - 24 February: The mother of all award ceremonies: the Oscars. Many insiders believe that an Oscar is the key to "real recognition" in the film industry, and with notable winners who still continue to raise the bar, one cannot disagree. The Steven Spielberg epic Lincoln and musical Les Misérables are said to be the biggest contenders this year.
-
NOTABLE MENTION: The 65th Directors Guild Awards - 2 February: This academy sets out to award the efforts of directors working in film, television and media. Generally known as the "Directors Oscars", this ceremony has seen many notable winners such as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg and Ang Lee.
-
NOTABLE MENTION: The 2013 Producers Guild Awards (PGA): Just like the Directors Guild Awards, the PGA sets out to award producers in the film, television and media industry for their work. The award ceremony has also been considered a strong indicator of who will take the Best Picture Oscar.
