Black Ice is uncannily 80s, the kind of thing you’d find in the same time capsule as a Betamax tape of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and for-her shoulder pads. But for AC/DC, being back where they started is more than anyone could ask for.
The performance is relentless. The fifteen-strong tracklist lands one winning punch after the other, with deft uppercuts like “Smash ‘n Grab” and “Rock ‘n Roll Dream” peppered in between to knock you completely senseless.

Every step of the way, guitar twins Malcolm and Angus Young sound like they’ve been doing nothing but practice in the eight years since Stiff Upper Lip. Meaty, crispy distortion is the name of the game, exactly the kind that made us love them so much in the first place.

Of course it’s a cash in: Brian Johnson’s hat doesn’t mend itself, you know. But the current spate of comeback albums have, generally, been fantastic re-iterations of the music we used to love. Given a little time away from it all, it seems, rock stars will inevitably rediscover their panging hunger for success. Black Ice is the defiant “hell no!” of a band that wants to die driving over a cliff in a flaming tour bus rather than fill in crosswords in a retirement home.

- Niel Bekker
Just when you thought his spider-veined knees couldn’t take it anymore, Angus Young starts duckwalking the arena stage once more with the crunchiest, ballsiest riffs ever heard this side of Back In Black. Ladies and Gentlemen, AC/DC have returned.
