Atomic Kitten - The Greatest Hits - Atomic Kitten - The Greatest Hits

If the Kittens' fan base is any indication of what intelligence level they appeal to, then pop is in trouble. Take jas, commenting on BBC's site: "i thought it was great ans someone like me was a great ending to it and end to a great era". What does that mean? And since when was five years an "era"? Sure, the point of this music is not to be challenging or clever, but rather, fun. No problem - but does fun have to mean empty headed and predictable?

Atomic Kitten took up when the Spice Girls left off. Their even blander blend of fluff, shampoo-advert sex appeal, girly pals publicity stunts was so media friendly and entertaining that we all tended to forgive them for being really bad at music. But we shouldn't forgive them. This compilation of radio hits and hitlike tracks is a shameful reminder that fluff flies off the record store shelves while music with any depth languishes unwanted.

Sure, the Kittens' pop is fairly pleasing stuff. Their smoothly stroking layered vocals on upbeat ballads like "Whole again" are almost seductive. Horrendously silly and embarrassing pop tracks like "Ladies night" are brilliantly produced ear candy. And their cover of the Bangles ballad, "Eternal Flame" is cute enough.

But trendy as it's become to enjoy dumb pop in an "intelligent" way, sometimes it's just too challenging. This album is only worth owning if you really really like Atomic Kitten a lot. For some reason. In which case, for your own sake, stay far away from people like me.

WHAT OTHER CRITICS SAID:

"If this hits collection is to be their parting gift, then weeping fans will not be disappointed. The album features fifteen tracks from the felines, most of which are a fair representation of the Kittens' consistent chart success."

PURE POP! When it comes to pop there arent many others out there who did it better than the KITTENS. Well produced radio friendly catchy tunes all the way through. My favourites being Last Goodbye, Come to Me. Well done KITTENS.
