Glaskas - Engele wat skree

Glaskas

Deon Meiring is a thoughtful songwriter, sometimes too serious or wordy for his own good but generally the kind of inquisitive, honest mind that easy listeners like to spend their time with. Afrikaans lyricism is still finding its idiom, and “Telkens is jy die bestemming van hierdie hartstog” isn’t quite it. More missteps follow, but if a guy can get away with “Ek is – nes jy – kleurvol” in address to our infamous racial divide, then he’s got things to look forward to.

The music itself veers between pop-punk and power ballads, and relishes the ground in between. Not particularly versatile, then. Given the choice between two Glaskaste, the rebellious rockers we hear in “System” and the slower, more dramatic sound of “Ek wonder”, I’d have to say the latter is more interesting. Anything to get real passion out of Meiring’s voice, which often settles on a low emotional plateau where his material demands more.

We know that Glaskas aren’t the only ones on MK who like singing about love, friendships and all that black/white malarkey. But in doing so, they touch upon some of the good lyrical places that Afrikaans rock is spreading to. And that’s cool.

Fans of Afrikaans rock have seen many bands like Glaskas come and go. Their mix of bounding rock, bittersoet ballads and healthy quantities of political angst is arguably the same blueprint that made Spinnekop, Akkedis and even Karen Zoid sound so good the first time we heard them at Aardklop and the KKNK.
