Grammy Nominees 2009

That said, there are some great tracks here, and we all like to see our favourite musos get the cred they deserve. The disc opens with the epic "Viva la Vida" from Coldplay who are nominated in a whopping seven categories. They’re bound to at least go home with one or two, probably Album of the Year.

Next up we jump shores to one of my favourite collaborations of the year, Estelle and Kanye West with "American Boy". Oddly enough they didn't crack the nod for the Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals category, only Song of the Year. Well if Kanye wins another one this year (last year he won Best Rap Album for Graduation), we’re all in for a treat with his track record of infamous speeches/tirades.

Eleswhere, the Jonas Brothers are pimped to get the Best New Artist award, but they've got a lot of girl power against them in pop-tastic offerings from Adele, and Jazmine Sullivan. Remember, the Grammys are about artistic achievement, not sales and charts. Or so they say. So I’d like to see Adele take it home for all the big girls out there!

This album is a pretty cool soundtrack to 2008, but in all likelihood you've got most of these tracks on your iPod already. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss's "Please Read The Letter" and Radiohead's "House of Cards" may have extended play-lives, but the rest of these tracks have been killed by heavy rotation, and are just like sooo last year right now. In the end, we’re all a lot more intelligent about the music we listen to these days, and that makes compilations like this obsolete.

Why would you buy this album? Compilations are a 90s relic. With iTunes playlists and digital music, you can pick and choose whatever you want to listen to. You don’t need some pretentious, old farts hiding behind their Academy to tell you who made it big in 2008. You know because you're way ahead of the pack, aren't you? [*wink*]
