Jamali - Fatally Yours

How sad that the runners-up in Popstars, the reality talent-search show that prided itself on being proudly South African, come off as poor carbon copies of the supergroup Destiny's Child. Even the word carbon copy is too generous as it implies these girls have actually managed to copy some, any, even a glimmer, of the stylings of the American glamazons. Sadly, their attempt was made in vain.

What we find instead, is a 13-track identity crisis.

While the girls sing mostly about first loves, heartache and girl fights in night clubs over a bottle of Cavarsia, it's the clash between American annunciation and African beats that pushes "Yours Fatally" beyond the point of resuscitation.

Although a pulse could be injected into a couple of tracks - if they're given an extreme makeover by an experienced vocalist -Jamali mainly deserves credit for the full (and grammatically correct) spelling of their thank yous n the liner notes.

It's rather unfortunate that Jamali's second album as well as the first single released off it is named "Yours Fatally". Or is it an omen for what follows?
