Malaika - Sekunjalo

2007-11-07 13:26
Malaika has experimented with new and fresh sounds that sure will have the rest of Africa listening and doing the kwassa-kwassa. They’ve worked with session musicians from Nigeria and Congo, roped in Mozambican musician and dancer Choppa to translate “Bambino” to Portuguese and grabbed the chance to feature the late afro-pop legend Jabu Khanyile on “Kiss Kiss”.

Ace producer Sello Chicco Twala co-wrote and produced “Never Change My Mind”. If you were surprised my Malaika featuring the late Jabu Khanyile, you might be even more surprised by their version of Wendy Oldfield’s “Don’t Stop Believing”.

The famous songbird Sibongile Khumalo’s son, Tshepo Mngoma is featured on strings and violin in “Sekunjalo” giving the album an eclectic but still very African vibe. Kwaito heavyweights DJ Christos, Spikiri and Guffy added their expertise to give Sekunjalo the unmistakeable Mzansi urban kwaito-house flavour.

The trio is sounding more serious on Sekunjalo raising political and social issues such as poverty, ubuntu and HIV. But fans know by now that a ‘bus-stop’ hit is always guaranteed for the festive season. With “Loketo” dominating the airwaves already, it’s most likely to become a Christmas and new-year anthem, once again.

-Gugu Mkhabela
If there’s one other thing besides catchy afro-pop hits Malaika’s been consistent with, it’s waiting for the last quarter of the year to release their albums. Will Mzansi be dancing the ‘bus-stop’ to more Malaika anthems during the festive season or will we be singing along to the same Christmas carols over re-mixed afro-pop beats? In other words is Malaika’s third album another Christmas chart attack?

Malaika I don' believe Malaika derserved this award, can't they give new and fresh artist like Martin a chance. Nonganga is really good can't someone see the talent and stop giving awards to ppl just because they are known. This is so unfair for these young artists. SA wake and stop destroying our talent.
