Mandoza - Ingwenya

Ingwenya

This year has been a challenge for kwaito's "bad boy", Sgelekeqe aka Tornado aka Ndozino, aka Mandoza. While it's interesting to see that his "Nkalakatha" partnership with Gabi Le Roux is still going strong, it's actually DJ Cleo who has his fingerprints all over this one. It's a good thing and makes Ingwenya one of the few kwaito releases that are listenable in this festive season.

Whether anyone will sacrifice their hard-earned rand to buy some of the kak that's on the kwaito shelves during this time of financial stress is questionable. Even the world’s best salesmen can’t sell most of rubbish that the so-called kwaito generals who are gunning for this season's buying power have released recently.

No such problems for Mandoza though, who continues to prove exactly why he is and will continue to be face of Kasi (township) music.

Have you seen the promotional video for "Myeke Baba"? It's a tight track and the video isn't that bad either, but the real hit song to watch out for this summer is "Life e' Ruff". Yep, it must be pretty tough for a man who's been in and out of courts in the past two years. There are also other festive tracks to look out for: "Ziyawa Le Summer" is a party starter; "Ekhaya Lame" features a funky R&B cameo from Jamali's Meriechan; "Goodbye to My Love" is a fun Afro-Asian pop colab with Japan's Baby M. And let's not forget about "Love" and "Ungabi Naki" which find the 'group of the moment', the Jaziel Brothers stepping up the soul.

Mandoza, with the help of his powerful production team of DJ Cleo and Gabi Le Roux, once again proves exactly why he is - and will continue to be - the face of Kasi (township) music.

You just cannot keep a great talent down. This man is a music icon and legend and has earned our respect for being credible & continually relevant to his art form. Kwaito has evolved and Mandoza has been an integral part of that change as the sounds begin to morph together with urban beats and styles.Mandoza belongs in our SA Hall Of Music Fame together with the likes of Lucky Dube, Brenda Fassie, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Ray Phiri to mention a very few. Congratulations on producing another great album. Mo Fire to Mandoza. Peace & Love, Bra G.
