Mariah Carey - The Ballads

The Ballads

And of course, there's the killer voice, but Mariah packages it all as a life and death situation. She literally cannot go on living without her true love, and we have no choice but to believe her entirely.

As if there aren't enough Mariah compilations out there (Number 1's, Greatest Hits, the Christmas album, the Remixes) we now get the pleasure of all her most memorable songs  - her ballads - in one package. However, her former record company Sony have had to play it rather fast and loose, so nothing from her recent (and rather excellent) catalogue (with Island records) is to be found here. So it offers a slanted and unflattering account of an otherwise incredible career.

The early highlights are all here – "Hero", "Vision of Love", "Dreamlover" and her stunning 1995 duet with Boz II Men "One Sweet Day" still sound fresh – but the fluff tacked on towards the end only lays bare the artistic drought Mariah suffered in the late 90s and early noughties.

Her duet with Westlife on Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" is not the type of thing this diva should ever attempt again, and no one needs a reminder that Glitter, Mariah's infamous failure of 1999, ever happened.

But most of these songs are so poignant; they will no doubt cause more than a few trips down memory lane, even though the compilers seem to be intent on pointing out how she kinda sucked for a while. There seems to be a myth going round that Mariah is not as good as she used to be. This album won't help matters. We all know her better than this.

Nobody, and I mean nobody, can make a bona fide ballad soar the way Mariah Carey does. The girl can make a cheesy, throwaway lines like "If it's wrong to love you, then my heart just won't let me be right" sound infinitely profound.
