Michael Jackson - Classic

Classic

Be warned though, this 15 track flashback might just put you in a double bind. It's a well-chosen collection of emotive songs about being misunderstood, staying hopeful and positive in love and life - spanning Michael's teen years from 1971 to 1975. But as soon as you hit repeat you'll probably mourn his lost childhood, rather than celebrate the superstar in the making.

Opening track "One Day in Your Life" is made even more poignant given his troubled history. His words "I will stay in your heart...and when things fall apart...you'll remember one day..." resonate sadly given his sudden death in June this year. Of course, it's also the song that launched thousands of high school ball slow dances and romances in the 70s and 80s.

It is sometimes tempting to read too much biography into lyrics like "With a child's heart, go face the worries of the day, with a child's heart turn each problem into play" (off "Child's Heart"). But in many ways that's how his life was...he worked as a child star and played as an adult. Then there's "Music and Me", which reminds us that as sad as parts of his later life might have been, he found something he loved to do really early on in his life.

Musically speaking, it’s all sweeping 70s strings except for dance tracks "Rocking Robin" and "Dapper Dan". While you might initially find them jarring, without them you might also descend into Michael melancholia. Which brings us to "Ben", the movie theme song originally written for Donny Osmond (remember him?) that became the first of 19 number-one pop hits for Michael in the USA. This legendary ode to a rodent has become the anthem of mismatched friendships everywhere. But hey, we all have a rat in our lives that totally gets us.

What makes this collection a classic is hearing all these well loved old school Michael hits on one album. "Got to be There", "My Girl", "We've Got A Good Thing Going" and "Just a Little Bit of You Everyday" are all sugar sweet love songs. Any mildly sexy content about adult relationships was obviously cut to keep this album 'clean'. So it's like being served your favourite treats at once AND you get a taste of the king of pop in the making. Your collection won't be complete without this slice of his story.

Which classic Michael tune is your favourite?

Which Michael do you love best? If you say the Thriller(1982) and Bad (1987) years then it's time to meet Motown Michael - the hardest working kid on the soul pop block.

Yeah, there's no doubt that the younger MJ was both a tragic figure and an icon in the making. His soulful performances of songs penned by mature talents, like Smoky Robinson, gave us a sense of just how far her would go later in life.
