Mzwakhe Mbuli - Mzwakhe’s Gospel Greats

2008-09-02 17:39
The veteran poet musician quotes biblical scripture, adds a few new verses and offers a few highlights for loyal fans. Mbuli covers the homeland classic "God Bless Africa" with joyful Zulu poetry. In "God the Best", which won an SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards earlier this year, Mbuli brings in a gospel singer and rounds the track off with brilliant choral harmonies – perfect for your Sunday morning ride to church. "Uzumbenam (Be with me)" is an upbeat track with a distinct Zulu culture, which would be fantastic for weddings or family get-togethers.
Mbuli's production seems to follow the old adage: if it's not broken, don't fix it. The tracks on the album follow the same style as previous offerings like Change in Pain and Unbroken Spirit. Accompanied by acoustic guitar and percussion beats, his style can be a little repetitive.

Overall Gospel Greats is one for his existing fan base. If you've heard him before then you’ll know what to expect. And while none of the songs will bowl you over, Mbuli's verse is always a winner for traditional 'praise' poetry fans.

Mzwakhe Mbuli's Gospel Greats is a collection of poetic worship with a distinct African flavour. So if you’re cooking Sunday lunch after church or waiting for guests to arrive, put a little Mbuli on to lift your day.
