Mdu, Brenda Fassie, Mandoza, Mzekezeke, Brown Dash, Mapaputsi, Danny K... that's the promising start of the star line-up gracing the tacky cover of this SA hits CD.

Mdu's punchy rap kicks off the compilation, backed by feisty choruses on "Sabela". Jamali does an average to good R 'n B job on "Dalile". Mandoza, Mzekezeke, Brown Dash and Mapuputse, all bring their different brands of gruff, swaggering and danceable kwaito to the party. Danny K and Mandoza rock on "Mission" off their collaboration Same Difference (2004). You might also enjoy Rhythm Fatale and Redd Angel's version of that old pony, "Man in the Mirror".

But Brenda's simple but aching "Gimme Some Volume 'Matshidiso'" is star of this show, not only because of her sweetly velvet vocals, but also thanks to the grumpy bit at the beginning where she whines truculently - presumably to the producer - "I can't hear the music. Gimme some volume". As this CD is the only place you'll find this track, Brenda makes Superfly worth picking up for a song.

Unfortunately more than half this compilation is taken up by one dimensional radio hits with no bite. If Superfly winds up in that half price rack, it deserves to.

There's no shortage of talent on the SA soul / kwaito / hip-hop scene, and the first half of this CD proves it. Unfortunately, the second half shows that bad judgement on the part of CD compilers is not yet a thing of the past.
