The Game - Doctor’s Advocate

He doesn’t mention any of the array of talented featured artists on the track listing, but hopes music lovers will buy the CD to hear the man spit. And those who do fork out their money get the pleasant bonus of hearing Will.i.am (of Black Eyed Peas), Nate Dogg, Kanye West, Swizz Beats, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Jamie Foxx, Nas, Marsha Ambrosius of Floetry sing, spit or produce.

Without Dr Dre, who produced his debut album, Game is still at the top of his game. He spits from the heart about the life he knows in Compton, USA, and friends he has lost. He apologises to former friends and brags about his proficient skills on the mic. He has matured as an artist and as a person – downplaying beefs he has with 50 cent and his G-Unit camp. If music is a form of communication, then The Game has gone a little overboard. He talks to Dre so often – 33 times to be exact – it’s like a 16-page open letter to his former partner. But then again, the title of the album does indicate that will be paying homage to his mentor and idol.

Another unfortunate error Game commits is to continue to degrade and offend women in his lyrics. He uses the word bitch 60 times. In “Wouldn’t Get Far” he raps: “Where the bitches at / You fucking on the first night, meet me in the back… Move bitch! Who the fuck you think they came to see? / The protégée of the D R E / You take a picture with him, and you gotta fuck me / And you gotta fuck Busta, can't touch Eve / Got something in my waist that you can't touch either / That's - my gangsta bitch … Bitches get scared when niggas start fighting in the club … I fuck a different bitch seven days a week...”

Even with the offensive language and the Dre ass kissing, “Da Shit”, “It’s Okay (One Blood)” and “Doctor’s Advocate” are some of the best tracks on the album. Game mostly sticks to beats that remind listeners of NWA days when West coast ruled the rap charts, but sometimes tries new sounds with the help of his producers.

For this 26-year-old MC, playtime is over.

WHAT OTHER CRITICS SAID:

Doctor's Advocate isn't the classic that message boards are calling it, but it is a middling yet pleasurable record. Dre may be gone, but the Game and superstar helpers such as Scott Storch, Kanye West and Will.i.am have held on to Dre's M.O.: classic West Coast hip-hop streamlined and spruced up for 2006, with sturdy boom-bap and breezy funk decorated with 808 bass, squiggly keyboards and plenty of hooks.
-Christian Hoard for rollingstone.com

“On Doctor's Advocate, Game mostly just updates the hamfisted style of the first record, still obsessively dropping names and making ill-advised proclamations about how he's the West Coast Rakim or whatever. But those quirks have hardened into a likeably bizarre personal style, and he's added some of the playfulness of his mixtapes. His constant self-mythologizing feels a little more convincing now that he can bring a certain vividness”
-Tom Breihan for pitchforkmedia.com
Most hip-hop artists sell their album purely by promoting featured artists, but The Game takes a different route with Doctor’s Advocate.

Mixed Reactions I've always had a problem with The Game, I have a theory that he doesn't actually have his own style. Instead he just mimics the rappers he looks up to. This album is the same, sometimes I could swear I'm listening to the Doc. At the same time though, I think his album is one of the best rap album to be released recently (Nas was the best). It seems the Rap game isn't dead as Nas would suggest, but it is definitely is going back to it's roots (Ice T, Run DMC, Big Daddy Kane) with old school break beats. "Gansta Boogie" of the Doctor's Advocate does this perfectly and should have been a single.

Rap is CRAP *yawn* how many times can you listen to the generic mess called rap (and all commercial music for that matter). Ooh! you're such a badass mofo with your different 'bitches' every night and wearing your BS ghetto bling. gimme a break. life's sooo tough for the game. Just give me music with a tiny bit of substance. please.

the truth game is without a doubt the truth coz he is not ur conventional rapper he says it as it is,he mos def brought the west coast back to life ,and for one guy to take out a whole crew(g-unit) is out of the ordinary,he is definetly on point with his lyrics and he is only getting started, the album is not an classic but worth it,track that stands out is" wudnt get far" love the old school sample that khanye hooked up,and to the "bored to death"all i gotta say is stop listening to hiphop coz u dont understand it!!
Shifty McSteel 2007/02/14 9:08 AM
Godwin & "bored to death" BULLS**T "Game is not your conventional rapper", he is as much of a prepackaged product as most other rappers at the moment, and Godwin you must be out yo mind if you think he done taken out "the unit". Now I think Game's album is brilliant, but if you think for a second that 50's album isn't gonna kill it, your delusional. NOW "bored to death" I think you should change your name to "ignorant to death", if you really wanna generalize a genre of music you might as well do it to all genre's: Alternative Rock is all about suicide, Thrash metal is just politics, Reggae is about marijuana and love, country is about Donkeys and heart aches. You are really stupid!!!! for thinking millions of dollars are spent around the world on music that's just about blunts, bitches and forties. Go buy yourself a Nas album and get schooled!

on top of his game one thing I like about da game is ability to express his words, he says them loud and clear and that makes him on top of his game so I guess its just Hate or Love for West Coast MC

One Time let me highlights the shines on the Doctor's Advocate, the beat selection is top notch and him doing an album to the same level as his debut which was done by Dre and 50 is an effort not to go unoticed. the thumps down about the album is the name dropping. so i figure if Game stops name dropping and start writing something with substance, he will have classic in his hand and be a rap star untouchable. 50 Cent is not a rap star people so stop kidding ureselves, hes jus milking the game for all its worth.

The Game has just began The Game is the hottest thing in rap, hottest in the west coast and was the best member of G-unit...i mean G-Unot. Could 50 have produced an album like this after Get rich or die tryin without Dre? Don't think so! This cat has got respect from almost everyone in the rap game and has come along way since that beef with g-unit. Does the Game have game? FOR SURE!!!!
Shifty 2007/04/16 9:29 PM

Game da best This faint-hearted girl should stop analysing RAP albums coz profanity and hardhitting lyrics have always been part of da game.We love RAP for it's hardcore and in-your-face image and won't let it soften up so some girl can feel part of it.LOVE IT OR HATE IT, HIPHOP FOR EVER.
