Thembi Seete’s Music Is My Life is another of these recently released ‘black diamond’-via-adult contemporary albums that set out to go across the board – literally. It skips to a different genre for every second song. For example: Music Is My Life opens with a catchy deep house tune (“Nkosi”) and closes off with a heart-felt, traditional-cum-gospel lament (“Ha Le Lakatsa”).

While all of this might seem overwhelming – if not excessive – for one album, Music Is My Life works in that Thembi seems not only at ease, but charmingly confident and even light-hearted with each of the different sounds she tries her hand at. It’s easy to imagine Music is My Life as a loving celebration of contemporary local pop – a kind of covering, if not re-taking, of today’s Mzantsi favourites and chart staples. It’s the type of album whereby if it were to be discovered in a time capsule some time off in a ridiculous year, the future species or aliens or what have you would know our club-antics down to the hip-swaying tee – they’d be able to make a science of how we were getting down and sweaty in Africa’s most southern tip, circa 2009.
