As expected, it's the usual mix of familiar chart-topping favourites including the requisite collection of boy bands (Westlife's "Unbreakable", Five's "Closer to Me", Nsync's "This I Promise You), teen pop (Britney's "I'll Never Stop Loving You") and R&B jams (Toni Braxton's "Spanish Guitar"). There's also a smattering of more mature love listens courtesy of Dido ("Here with Me"), M People ("Just For You"), Lonestar ("Amazed") and Sarah McLachlan ("Angel").All well and good, but why on earth trawl out a never-was-been like Rick Astley? Especially if he's going to murder one of the greatest love songs ever written - Nat King Cole's "When I Fall in Love"! Hell at least Idols extra, our very own Nicole Billingham, supplies a more than satisfying emotional twist to her rendition of Faith Hill's "Breathe"!
"Special Low Price!" the CD cover sticker proudly champions. Yeah, like that's actually going to tempt anyone into actually buying the latest Valentine Day collection of "18 Beautiful Love Songs" to clog up the supermarket shelves. Then again, maybe there's a method to such hard-sell madness. The supermarket is probably the only place where this slapped together selection is going to sell.
