Like it or not, the treffers vein of Afrikaans music is its most popular, its most important and crucially, its most lucrative. Even younger, urban dwelling listeners are now more forgiving of the genre, thanks to hits both controversial (“De La Rey”) and not (“Kaptein”). For now at least, it’s here to stay.
We like value for money at Channel24 and this compilation has to be one of the most comprehensive in any language or genre that we’ve seen (excluding perhaps, Volume 1 of this same collection). “Rooi Rok Bokkie”, “Rock Daai Lyfie”, “Meisie Meisie”, “Leeuloop” and “Drie Pikkewyne” – some of the biggest sokkie hits in recent memory – are all included, and tons more. Add to that the inclusion of acclaimed songwriters like Karen Zoid, Koos Kombuis and Laurika Rauch, and you have an encyclopedia of Afrikaans music that can be enjoyed for hours on end.
Of course, not everyone could make the party, but the most glaring omissions – Anton Goosen, for instance – can be found on the first edition of Afrikaanse Treffers. It really is that big.
So, if you’re planning a makietie in the garden this weekend, or have to entertain some relatives from Brits or Ficksburg, and even if you have to send the Afrikaans culture hurtling off into space, you can’t do much better than this.
