African culture tops CTIJF Kippies stage

When you think of Thandiswa Mazwai one word will surely come to mind - tradition.

The artist performed at this years' Cape Town International Jazz Festival. As she took to the stage, she burnt impepho (herb that is used in the African culture to chase away evil spirits, nightmares and bad luck) she also danced and called on her ancestors.

In those moments she seemed transfixed and in her own world while instruments created meditative music for the audience.

Despite her strong traditional performance there were other cultures and races in the crowd. Many in the audience could not understand her but could tell that the performance came from a real and true place.

Mazwai said during a press conference that her main focus is on changing the minds of young people by making them think and question.

The Zabalaza star is currently planning a national tour with her all-female band.
