Metallica was epic at Coke Fest 2006

I was indeed there, at that epic, historic moment when the glory of the Metal Gods graced our continent for the first time.

The festival was long and arduous; many hours spent in the sun in anticipation. The opening acts were entertaining, solid performers who kept the crowds busy. But sadly the lack of foresight from security meant that water was scarce (as it had all been confiscated at the gates along with umbrellas etc) and patrons who arrived early to secure a spot on the front rail as many of us did, were reluctant to leave.

But eventually…

The lights fell dark, the crowd grew restless and the hair tingled along our necks, we had waited so very long for this and couldn’t contain our excitement as we saw shadowy figures making their way onto the stage.

At first confusion; we could hear a recording playing, not Lars – but then, the sticks fell and the drums resounded through us all. Metallica were here, and they were rocking!

What followed can only be described as elation as we went wild; screaming, moshing, loving every note piercing our eardrums.

Almost every great hit followed and as the crowd’s energy waned from the heat of the day as the event starting at noon – James made sure to keep us alive and enthused.

Then there was silence. We waited, and waited. Then cried and pleaded for yet more, we cheered and called but nothing… And in a moment of silence; gunfire.

That resounding familiar gunfire – followed by a similarly familiar Huey chopping the air – they were playing One. They made their way back onto stage for an epic number all cumulating in a fantastic solo.

To top it all off, when they were done, I even grabbed one of Robert Trujillo’s picks that he threw out into the crowd (Kirk’s narrowly dancing between my fingers and escaping) – today it sits framed along with the wrist band for the concert.

Easily an amazing concert, worth any rocker or metal head’s time and hard earned money.
