Battle of the B®ands

In case you've been held in deep house bondage for the past six months... Fokofpolisiekar’s Francois van Coke (voice) and Wynand Myburgh (bass) have formed a brand new Afrikaans garage rock band, Van Coke Kartel with good mate Justin Kruger (drums). Not to be outdone Hunter Kennedy (lead guitar) and Jaco ‘Snake’ Venter (drums) started their own English pop-rock band, aKING with good buddies Laudo Liebenberg (vocals, geetar) and Hennie Van Halen (bass).

Yes it's all rather incestuous, but hey, this is SA, okay? The rock scene is small. Classic rock rivalries of the calibre of Beatles vs. Rolling Stones aren’t exactly the stuff of SA rock legend. So it's no surprise that critics have an uncontrollable urge to compare these two bands: whose album kicks ass, whose video is slicker, which band is sexier, and hey - why not - who’s Oasis and who’s Blur? Oh c’mon! Is there one week where we won't hear some media hype about the rivalry between ex-Fokofpolisiekar’s offspring? Sick and tired of all the speculation the two gangs decided to end these disputes once and for all. They met for a showdown in the sweltering midday sun at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town and used artist Johann van der Schijff’s Arm Wrestling Podium to challenge each other for the title of ‘Best B(r)and’. They did it for the sake of their art and yes, for die taal.

But enough banter. Could Francois ‘the Fumigator’ out fox Laudo ‘Loose Cannon’ Liebenberg? Was Wynand ‘Witblitz’ Myburgh all mouth and no muscle against 'Hectic' Hennie van Halen? Surely Jaco ‘Snake’ Venter would be the slang in Justin ‘the Praying Mantis’ Kruger's gras? And did Hunter ‘the Heartbreaker’ Kennedy show us his dark side? Oh c’mon, just tell us who the hell went over the top!?

Sure, but you’ll have to watch the video to find out who won. It's easy, just click on one of the links:
