Finding Neverland

"Remember to tag me as PAROW HILTON!" A hybrid of Jack Parow trash and heir-head glam leans over to see her photo. "Profile picture!" her peroxided peers giggle and cheer on as she grabs her namesake and the reason for the 600 people in Aandklas around the waist "Another one PLEASE!!"

Before I moved to Stellenbosch I was warned: "Good luck hey, all the people are uncannily beauuuuuuuutiful there", my friend said. "They're all so skinny and dressed well and their hair doesn't even move!" "Well yeah", our local expert confirmed, "but they all look the same." Wasn't that girl making out with another guy from the same band five seconds ago? There she is again! Oh no, they just have the same haircut. And hat. And plimsolls. And white-vest-black-high-waisted-skirt combo.

Aandklas's walls drip with rock images, literally. Painted life-size images of some of South Africa's favourite acts, like aKing, Lark, Fokofpolisiekar and Prime Circle, adorn them. Rocker girls mix Taylor Momsen with Agyness Deyn or opt for the dark Leigh Lezark look mentioned above. Rocker guys tend to stick to the Belville style, of which the skinny jean is the key item, followed by the plaid shirt or white vest, trilby, skunk hair and moustache. Incidentally this must not be confused with the Kings of Leon look, (which is similar but Anglophone and sans moustache).
