Four Factor: Kwaito Stars

2007-06-01 12:17
Street factor:
When we say street, we mean "which one?" Does the star live in Parkview, or Zola?

Bling factor:
Does he have the babes, the wagon, and all the other disposable glam that makes a Kwaito star shine?

Value factor:
CDs don't sell nearly as fast as gear. Cell phones, shoes, entire yellow suits - any musician who wants to do it for a living sells their line.

Soul factor:
Do we believe this star actually cares about the world, or is charity work just another platform from which to flog sneakers? ZOLA
Street factor:
Okay, Zola has been known to roll into the hood in his fancy Chrysler Crossfire or his “Zola 7” mini bus. But he has not lived in the dusty streets (Yes, dusty. Townships are always described as dusty) of Zola in years. Last we heard he was living in leafy (yes leafy, suburbs have lots of trees) Melville, definitely not the ghetto. And his record label Ghetto Ruff? It’s around the corner from his home in Auckland Park! - 7

Bling factor:
The Zola 7 chain that hangs from his neck is not cheap. Neither is the maintenance for his kids, baby mamas nor his ride. - 9

Value factor:
He has a clothing line, shoes and now has a cell-out deal with Cell C. -10

Soul factor:
With his show “Zola 7”, Zola helps young people in Mzansi and all over Africa. His recent Cell C deal also contributes to charity. Obviously all this add to the exposure for his apparel and the Zola brand. But it seems genuine enough. -9

Street factor:
He may be from Zola, but the last time the masses saw Mandoza in the township was during his wedding to his sweetheart in 2003. Yes, maybe he does go there every so often, but his life is now in the suburbs. - 6

Bling factor:
You've seen his designer sunglasses. They look expensive. (When we asked Intyme Inc where he gets his sunglasses from, their response was: “We do not want to expose that.” We hope they didn’t fall off the back of a truck! Even if it has, Mandoza does have the bling factor: stylish designer threads, gold grill and stylish wife. - 8

Value factor:
He had a clothing line, which lasted about a minute. His people say it’s no longer happening. - 2

Soul factor:
His people at Intyme Inc say he will be giving away his Chrysler Crossfire in a competition. “The state has just withdrawn charges against him today so we can get back on concentrating on stuff like that [charity work].” Come on, no excuses Mandoza. -0

Street factor:
He may be one of the guys from eKasi who have finally made it, but his recent car problems (read the gossip article) bring us to question if he even has a home anymore. Being immobile definitely does add a little extra to the street cred. -8

Bling factor:
What bling?!!! Last time we heard his former record label had repossessed his car! He gets a point for having had some bling. -1

Value factor:
Huh?!!! -0

Soul factor:
Brown Dash is probably trying to fix finances and giving back is the last thing on his mind! -0

Street factor:
You wouldn’t suspect this is a Kasi cat from his posh model C accent. But Kabelo has left the hood way behind him. If you’ve seen him in Soweto lately pls tell us, because we haven’t! -5

Bling factor:
Now that he has trimmed downed it’s all about the flash. While his waist has trimmed, his designer wardrobe has grown. He proved it at the 2007 SAMA when he had a different outfit each time he appeared on stage. Last we saw him he was driving a Mini Cooper, a car of choice for a Kwaito star who’s arrived. - 8

Value factor:
Kabelo landed his own line of Reebok sneakers a few years ago, and it’s selling…fast. -10

Soul factor:
If you are a born again Christian like Bouga, you have to listen to the message of the Lord when it says: “Give, give, give”. As a result he has been known to be involved in charity concerts and good causes. But we know he can do more. Maybe His voice can shout a little louder. -7

SCORES (out of 40 points)
Zola - 35
Mandoza - 16
Brown Dash - 9
Kabelo aka Bouga Love - 30

And the Winner is...
Phew, that was closer one between Zola and Bouga! But Zola is a clear winner. Now if only he would release a new album already!

They are constantly spitting over Kwaito beats about how they are from eKasi, but are they keeping it real or selling out big time. We rate Kwaito stars.
