And a few copiously cool international freebies, this week from our friends over at Sub Pop Records

The Vaselines
Fans of everyone from The Velvet Underground to Belle & Sebastian and our own Black Hotels are going to groove on this lo-fi indie love song from the cult Scottish duo's new retrospective CD, The Way of The Vaselines. Not convinced? Well, how does the fact that The Vaselines were Kurt Cobain's favourite combo, grab you? Yep, Nirvana covered this baby on their Hormoaning EP back in 1992. This definitive, deluxe-edition reissue of the 1992 Sub Pop release has a new title, new cover art from the band, and a bunch of new material including new mixes and re-mastered versions of everything they recorded, plus never-before-heard demos, and live recordings from 1986 in Bristol and 1988 in London. Download: Son of a Gun courtesy of Sub Pop Records (Right click and choose 'Save As': be patient).

Iron & Wine
Americana favourite (aka Sam Beam) shares this gorgeous acoustic folk strummer off his latest 2 CD collection of out-of-print, and previously unreleased recordings, Around the Well. Spanning Iron and Wine's earliest sessions from 2002's debut The Creek Drank the Cradle through material recorded for 2007’s The Shepherd’s Dog, the first half of the collection features an assortment of hushed home recordings, unedited and raw, and the second highlights moments captured in the confines of proper studios with the help of other musicians, friends and engineers. Download: Belated Promise Ring courtesy of Sub Pop Records (Right click and choose 'Save As': be patient).

Brazilian electro-rock favourites fire up this frenetically sexy dose of indie dance rock spontaneity off their latest album Donkey. Produced in Brazil by the band's own Adriano Cintra and mixed in Los Angeles by Mark "Spike" Stent (cf. songs by Madonna, Bjork, Massive Attack, U2, M.I.A., and Arcade Fire), the press blurb reckons it's "Equal parts dance party, urban circus, and out-and-out chaos, the band’s unaffected, unbridled joy in performance is for real and for you". But hey, why don't you decide? Ride the Donkey! Download: Rat Is Dead (Rage) courtesy of Sub Pop Records (Right click and choose 'Save As': be patient).
