Hip Hop Indaba Rocks

Hip hop heads, girls who hoped to date the next big thing and assorted crews gathered at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town this weekend to see who could spin and spit the best. The crowd wasn’t disappointed. Even when some of the acts were wack it was entertaining with the Mother City massive stepping up to act as judge, jury, and executioners by vocalising their preferences.

At the end of the night DJs Redwood and Nifty took home the best DJ prize which includes a chance to compete at the world championships in the UK, the first time SA goes there in 10 years. MC heavy weight Verrassing took home the title of best MC. On the Beat Box front, Ace Bear spat the competition out of the room for the second time in a row.

Saturday night drew the largest crowds as b-boys battled it out for a chance to compete in the world championships in Germany. The mostly male crews mixed old skool moves with 21st century crunking and there was often a prop – basketball, skateboard or flag – to make the performance interesting. When Last Minute was announced as the winner, they bounced onto the stage to a roar from fans who’d fallen for their confidence, charm and acrobatic dance moves.
