Idol vs Idol

All scores are audited and verified by my Windows Calculator so you can be assured that no late scores will be entered into the final result, and this time, there will only be one winner.

1. Voice
When the spotlight's gone and they're alone in a studio, can they still give it stick? /10

2. Song
It's the first year that the Top 2 contestants performed different songs. Which one is more likely to infect the airwaves? /10

3. The Other Song
The winners' singles were released together with their best song from the competition. Fabulous or floptastic? /10

4. Staying Power
Who's going to be the next SA music powerhouse and who's going to fade away and just be that singer from that TV show? /10

Since she was the first one to tote the title, let's begin with the star of Atlantis:

SASHA-LEE
1. Voice
Big lungs in a tiny frame make sure that Sasha-Lee is heard wherever she goes. How pleasant that sound is though, is a different tune. While Sasha-Lee does have a powerful voice, she had to work harder than anyone else in the competition to stay on key. And keeping it that way is still one of her biggest challenges. 7/10

2. Song – "True Believer"
Sasha-Lee wins this round fair and square. "True Believer" is a real finger-clicker that has all the stylings of a great contemporary pop/ R&B track and it suits her voice perfectly. Lucky fish! 9/10

3. The Other Song – "Spotlight" originally by Jennifer Hudson
Oh no, honey. Sasha-Lee may be a diva but can anyone really do this song justice besides J-Hud? And the fact that she forgot some of the words in the first verse is just inexcusable. FAIL. 4/10

4. Staying Power
Pretty young things like Sasha-Lee will always have a place in the tabloids, but will she survive on the CD racks? Probably not. There aren't enough music stores in Atlantis to ensure that her CD reaches Gold status. However, she's only 19 so she's got a good few years to get better and make a name for herself. A few extra points for youth. 5/10

JASON
1. Voice

Gravel was never so smooth. On stage Jason and Sasha-Lee complement each other, but on these discs it's clearly obvious who has the better voice. Maybe it's got to do with maturity or perhaps it simply comes down to talent, but Jason's warm tone and impeccable control is what sets him apart from other winners. 8/10

2. Song – "Break The Silence"
When questioned about this song after his supposed defeat that night, Jason bitched about it not being his choice, but rather that of the producers. Okay, so it's an average song that falls flatly somewhere between Snow Patrol and Just Jinger, but I must admit it's growing on me. Kudos to Jason for making the best of a crappy situation. 6/10

3. The Other Song – "Everything I Do" originally by Bryan Adams
OMG. Gareth Cliff called it a panty dropper and I can vouch for that. When Jason sang this in the Top 4 round, it was the first time I had goosebumps throughout the entire season. He perfects the dynamics of the song and that just lends an incredible amount of sincerity and emotion to the performance. The only fault here is that many of his fans have probably never heard the song before. 9/10

4. Staying Power
At 29, Jason has a lot of life experience and perhaps desperation to make this work because his time is running out. His voice and sound are more timeless than trendy, as illustrated by his choice of songs. However, if he doesn't release a good album soon, I'm afraid he'll just have to be satisfied with Friday night gigs at Crossroads in Pietermaritzburg. 6/10

SCORES:
Sasha-Lee: 25/40
Jason: 29/40

And your real Idol is... Jason!

They may both be winners, but the real competition only begins now. So who's got the better single? To be fair, we've come up with a few categories to score our Idols in and then we'll tally up the results.

Finally, somebody can count properly. for the record, I personally think that Sasha Lee sounds like a parrot when she sings her song. Sorry Sasha Lee and fans, I just don't like her!

You forget to mention that the song True Believer "borrows" a lot of elements from Leona Lewis' "Better in Time". Listen to the intros of both songs, you can't tell the difference. No wonder it has all the stylings of a great contemerory pop/R&B track. Couldn't they come up with something more original?

Jason rocks.

Jason's single is no.1 on KFM and Highveld's Top 40 at the moment. A FISRT for any South African Idol. Jody held a no. 2 spot for a while and Heinz a no.18 but no one else went to no.1 before. So take that and smoke it. Being on the charts proofs the real winner....

Was lucky enough to see them both at the Wayne Brady show in Cape Town. I was totally bowled over as they both have talent clearly. Jason however will be around longer - Sasha Lee sounds like every other female artist out at the moment so she'll be forgotten along the way I'm afraid. She might prove us wrong but my vote's with Jason

sasha is always off-key and sounds like she needs voice training. ditto for jody. i like them both but they're not going to "great" singers.

South African Musican 2009/06/15 2:46 PM
I have to disagree with this article, simply for the following reasons: Being a musican myself, I can truthfully say that Sasha Lee is a better artist SIMPLY because she has more dynamic than Jason. Yes, I have to give Jason his due, he is a excellent singer, but we need to look at this objectively and realise that a musical artist has to be able to sing and perform various genres of music to be called a true artist. Unfortunately, I cannot say that this is true for Jason. Sasha Lee does not sound like a Parrot, nor does she sing off key. Maybe your ears just aren't trained enough to hear the vocal capabilities of a true artist. And if you listen carefully, Jason is not Mr on-key himself...nor does he posess the ability to change styles of music. All I can see coming from his albums is a single spat of bland same old same olds, that get the older (35+) generations of SA tapping....Get with the times. It's 2009! No wonder his hits are No.1 on KFM...Compare it to the other relatively bland genres being aired, and I'm sure you'll find it to be a no.1 hit! nuf said!
Not deserving 2009/06/15 3:24 PM
The song that they break the airwaves with, already Jason fails there. I would have loved that Jason won fair and square, not thru the back door. Phoning or smsing late and cry foul that your vote was not counted is not good enough reason. Fact is Sasha, though not my favourite singer, won the "elections without any rigging" The same cannot be said about Jason. pity both were not my favourites, had race not played a part, Ntsepa should have won this competition without even raising a sweat. Now we have to debate between the two underachievers here as to who is the best, you ask me that, I'd say, None. I had a soft spot for Jason after his rendition of that song after his brother departed this world, that song was a master piece and not the Everything i do of bryan adams. But he is too much of a mimic, he can sing other peoples songs better than his own songs, then where is his identity going to come from people?

Oh for goodness sake... can we please just move on from this whole Idols embarasement, the competition is now FINALY over... for good I hope..Both Jason and Sasha-Lee are individuals, and have their own unique style of singing. Why do they still need to be compared and critisised, all fans got what they wanted so, no lossers, but two winners... now let's hope that we all get the cherry on top, and that they stop Idols for good, as it's been nothing but a waste of money, as none of the Idols winners are still around or making a true name for themselves in the industry, apart from the odd one or two performances, where they duet with some other big name.... ENOUGH OF IDOLS FOR EVER & EVER I HOPE!!!!!!!!!

Not deserving, for goodness sake get on with life, race are only still playing a part in your little life
Brad 2009/06/15 9:53 PM
It's funny how the piece starts "They may both be winners". What load of rubbish! Jason got th most votes and he is the winner. Sasha-Lee is a coward and knows she's second rate.
4GoodnessSake 2009/06/16 4:27 AM
when will people realize that artists cannot be compared to one another. Each has their own style and individuality. The vote count was a botch but at the end of the day it isnt a question of who is better BUT who is more popular. Just shut up and stop whinging, if you dont like Jason or Sasha, then don't buy their music. Both of them got equal share of the spoils after all.
TO ALL THE FOOLS 2009/06/16 1:29 PM
TO ALL THE IDOL BELIEVERS -YOU ARE FOOLS. THE WHOLE IDOL COMPETITION LOST ITS CREDITABILITY - WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER SUNDAYS WHEN SMS'S WERE ALSO DELIVERED LATE - MAY BE ONE OF THOSE EIGHT THAT LOST IN THE PREVIOUS WEEKS SHOULD BE THE WINNER!!!!!!!!!
