He may live in the suburbs but DJ Sbu says he is still in touch with his Kasi roots. “I’m very lucky because I’ve never tried to act like now I’m better than everybody else. I‘m just that dude that is always very township that even my friends say ’You are so Ghetto.’ I like that ‘cause I’m like that. It’s not easy to separate me from ilokishi (township). At Ukhozi FM I’m now in an environment where I’m closer to the people.”

To those who criticise his use of international artists and songs for his remixes, he says he is just making music people love.

“I’m as South African as they come. I’m very real. If you listen to my skits [on the new album Y-Lens Vol. 2] you’ll sense that I’m very much Township. Doesn’t matter whether I’ve got R2 in my bank account or a million. I don’t think the way you do your music determines how real you are as a person… I’m not an artist, I don’t sing, I make music, I produce music. I tell my story through other people’s music. If people don’t feel I’m not really SA, they show that by not buying my album. But so far they are buying it, so clearly they can sense I’m South African.”

And the question everybody wants an answer to… Is he Mzekezeke, the masked kwaito star?

“…Joe, are you saying if I’m Mzekezeke - hypothetically speaking - then it means I’m a good actor. Clearly if I’m Mzekezeke then I’m extremely talented or intelligent…”

- Nomfundo H. Mbaba+Tshabalala

DJ Sbu is a producer, a DJ, a radio personality, a TV show host, celebrity, a musician and co-owner of a record label. He is what you'd call a jack of many trades. But is he Mzekezeke?
