SOPPY & SWEET

Percy Sledge - Shining through the rain

Or Percy Sludge, as he's also known, is the king of emotive romantic balladeering, making an art form of being lonely. Terrible cover, but don't judge it by that. Give it a listen if you like quality old fashioned soul and country music.

Jill Scott - Beautifully Human
The best of both worlds. Jazzy soul with nu-soul production and wonderful lyrics. A masterpiece from the queen of song writing and live spectaculars. If there's one RnB album you buy this year, this is it. On the sexy side of soppy, and very sweet.

Various - De-Lovely Soundtrack
There's something about movie music that's really made for romance. Get this collection of Jazzy vocalists covering Cole Porter classics.

Ennio Morricone - Film Music
Flute, cello, viola and piano arrangements of Morricone classics like Lolita, the theme from The Mission and other beautiful music conducted by the man himself.

IF YOU REALLY RESPECT THEM...

Various alternative artists - Lost In Translation OST
Way ahead of its time when it was released, and will appeal to lovers of left field sound - featuring artists like Kevin Shields, Air, Phoenix, Jesus and Mary Chain and more.

Chris Rea - The Blue Jukebox
Rea gets rougher and deeper and much sexier. The voice of an exhausted romantic on this collection of seductive songs.

Pheonix - Alphabetical
Romantic? Am I crazy? Not quite, yet. If anyone thought as hard about you as these guys clearly think, then I reckon they'd be pretty in love. Check it out, it's really special stuff.

GREAT FOR ER...

Air - Talkie Walkie
Like Phoenix, these guys are from France. Unlike Phoenix there music is what you'd call touchy feely (perhaps that would have made a superior album title) and it's perfect for putting on when you're all loved up and want to get it on.

Sweetback - Stage [2]
It also goes beyond just being a seduction soundtrack. Beautiful, simple and sweetly addictive. You'll want it again and again.

Norah Jones - Feels Like Home
Alluring late night listening that will appeal to pop and blues fans, lovers and loners, alike.

Alicia Keys - The Diary of Alicia Keys
Poppy but definitely no innocent little girl, she manages to be thoughtful and naughty all at once. A delicious combination. And piano ballads are always a winner.

Mandoza + Danny K - Same Difference
For the energetic lovers out there. But well worth the effort, trust me. These are not just two of the cutest dudes on our music scene, also two guys with serious hitmaking talent that gets clubbers of all races, creeds, colours and musical persuasions onto the dance floor, shaking it. An almost edible, very punchy combo of Mandoza's kwaito and Danny K's soul. Get down to it. So to speak.

CHILLED or HILARIOUS...

340ml - Moving
Hybrid band with a bit of reggae mixed with plenty of pop and a dash of soul cream as topping. Songs about driving, loving, arbing around and being in Africa.

MXO - Peace of Mind
MXO has the killer musical gift - a really deep, textured but velvety voice. He's also blessed with a real pan-African accent. He's made a very cool summer album that's exotic but African, chilled but danceable.

William Shatner - Has Been
It's not at all funny, in fact his cover of "Common People", and his "I can't get behind this" are awesome songs. But the more sincere he gets, the more you sometimes throw up your hands in amazement and amusement. If you have a geeky lover and wish to blow them away, this is the ticket. Just knowing about it (Shatner played Captain Kirk in Star Trek, for those who don't know!) is enough to turn the average geek into your slave for life.

Gunther - Pleasureman
The worst CD of the year - I give it five stars, all of which I'd use to cover the lingering shot of Gunther's hairy buttocks as he stands up from a floor filled with highly inauthentic "lesbians". The music is unbearable. It's so bad that if you see it somewhere for cheap, you must buy it without delay.
