SA Adult Pop - our picks - The best of SA Adult pop

But somewhere underneath the radar, the last year or two has seen some high-quality adult contemporary releases go virtually unnoticed. Virtually, that is, except for the independent distribution channels like at MWEB's mp3 download pages, where bands dutifully submit their latest releases. Of course, all are free to listen to, and most are free to download, although you do have to be an MWEB member to get the very latest releases.

But you'll find a pretty good selection of real music here, straight from the studios, many independently released, and hardly ever any on any radio playlist. Who needs playlists then?

For example, Durban outfit Deluxe have started getting so due attention for their dulcet tones, as on "It's Allright". Read our review of their full album here.

Legendary Cape Town al band The Dollyrockers' "Lovesong" - off the acclaimed 2004 album The Heat - can still be heard here, as well as acoustic version of normally loud and proud rock chick Jo Day's "Porn".

Acoustic performer Joshua Grierson usually goes by the name of Emokidjosh, and "It's All About You" summarises this gifted artist's bent superbly. His recently formed full band Lovehunter are not too far off the mark, either, with "Falling Star".

Luna is a pianist/vocalist who successfully performs shows in both English and Afrikaans. "Step Outside" reveals a talent that should do very well on the concert circuit.

Rory Eliot and the late Chas Smit formed Plush, one of SA's most loved and respected young groups, before Smit was tragically killed in a car accident at 22 this year. "My Baby" demonstrates why they were national finalists and prize-winners at the RP Studios Emerging Sounds competition.

Usually making our ears bleed with raucous, dark and screaming rock guitars, The Roswell Kings show a different dimension with a lounge version of their single "Johnny Stereo and the Underground Dogs". Read an interview with them here.

And that's just a sampling of some of the underground quality available at MWEB MP3. Browse the archives and uncover those hidden gems for yourself. Post their names up to help others find them. Then go see the artists live. It's not that hard, and it'll cost you far less than seeing an international act.

It's often forgotten that some South African music listeners happen to be over twenty five years old. You could be forgiven for thinking otherwise, given contemporary radio and TV's preponderance for saturating us with teen-oriented guitar rock, teen oriented hip-hop, or teen-oriented dance-pop.
