Steve Hofmeyr grew up like any other white South African boy in his day, playing rugby at school, going to army and to the border. But he wasn't like all the others. Steve was set for the big time.
After army, he followed his dreams, and went to Drama school.
Within just a few years of graduating, Steve made his stage debut in successful musicals. So if he ever was your waiter at the local Spur, his career singing Happy Birthday was cut unusually short - by early success!
He is now a big time South African pop star. He's also a screen and stage star, having appeared in the popular MNET soap, Egoli. He's hardworking, and he understands what his fans need: Lots of drama, lots of controversy lots of attention, and lots of catchy songs - most of which he writes himself.
His personal life - including: accusations by young girls that he got them pregnant, paternity suits (which he lost), and punching a reporter - has kept the public entertained, and Steve in the media spotlight.Though some publicity has been negative, it only seems to have helped his album and ticket sales. Steve had the last laugh at last year's South African Music Awards when, despite winning nothing in any of the other categories, he scored the best selling album awards for Toeka. Once again, the fans spoke louder than the music critics, voting him into the top spot with their wallets. While some have doubted his chances, Steve Hofmeyr's success is indesputable, and his popular appeal is ongoing. When new young Afrikaans bands mention they've met him while on tour, in their online diary for fans, you know he'll always be out there. Steves latest album, Toeka 2, has already gone platinum.
