Top SA acts of 2006

South African release of the year
To qualify in this category, an album had to be principally produced, recorded and released in South Africa, by a South African artist.

Jim Neversink - Jim Neversink
Chilling blue velvet blues and rye humour - this comeback kid is brilliant.

Josie Field - Mercury
Josie Field brings a fresh new voice to the South African music scene. A voice you can’t ignore.

Love Jones - Love Jones
Love Jones enlist local rock guru Dave Birch to produce one of the best pop-rock albums of the SA year.

Chris Chameleon – 7de hemel
Chris Chameleon is rightly considered a leading light in SA’s adult pop and rock market.

Valiant Swart – Horisontaal
Still managing to churn out the stuff, Valiant shows no signs of dropping the ball as he gets on…

Best Live SA Act of the Year

The locals have been restless. 2007 was another growth year for live SA acts, and the quality of performances overall were pretty darn good. To be on this list, though, the artist had to bring something extra to the party – yes, the music should be good, but the stage act needed to be more than just an MC with a mic, or four guys thrashing with guitars. They had to leave you feeling exhilarated and wanting more. We’ll be first to admit we didn’t see absolutely everyone everywhere, but these acts generally rocked our major venues and festivals this year.

Goldfish
One of the first acts to truly jump the great divide between dance and live excitement, they’ve been burning up the roads and stages across the whole country.

Malaika
Great dancing and great tunes made crazy Tuks students cry at Oppikoppi

The Dirty Skirts
One of the most energetic and exciting pop and rock acts in the scene – and still improving, it seems.

Taxi Violence
Taxi Violence are easily the most improved stage act of the hard rock year.

Vusi Mahlasela
The veteran still manages to move us with soulful performances and beautiful music.

Freshlyground
Whether it’s just the hype of the crowd, or the quality musicianship on offer, it’s hard to keep them off this kind of list.

Mafikizolo
Snappy dressers with a sense of what the hottest styles are at any given.

Just Jinjer
Added after their awesome performance at Kirstenbosch on the 22nd. Coming soon, a gallery of that gig.
