5 of the best memorabilia unveiled at the new Hard Rock Cafe in Cape Town

Cape Town – On Monday afternoon Channel24 got a sneak peek at the brand new Hard Rock Cafe that will be opening in Camps Bay, Cape Town soon.

Located on the popular strip next to the beach, the restaurant stays true to the international brand and hosts some of the coolest music memorabilia.

The story of the birth of Hard Rock International’s memorabilia collection is itself a part of music history.

The collection was started when Eric Clapton, a regular customer at the original Hard Rock Cafe London, asked the staff if he could hang his guitar on the wall to mark his favourite bar stool as "his spot". They did, and one week later, a package from The Who’s Pete Townshend arrived with a guitar and a note bearing the message, “Mine’s as good as his! Love, Pete.”

Hard Rock’s music artifacts are rotated and its collection is constantly being expanded through auction houses, donations and private collections.

Here’s a taste of just some of the memorabilia you’ll be able to see at the Hard Rock Cafe Cape Town:

1) Bob Dylan's boots

These boots belonged to the one and only Bob Dylan. While wearing them on stage one night, Bob walked over to his guitar tech and asked him to find another pair because these were “jinxed”.

2) Slash chrome DW drum kit

Journeyman drummer Brent Fitz used this DW drum kit extensively throughout 2014 and 2015 while performing with guitar legend Slash. In addition to his work with Slash, Brent has recorded and performed with Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons, Theory of a Deadman and a host of other luminaries.

3) Kesha black bodysuit with safety pins

Modern pop provocateur Kesha wore this zippered bodysuit on stage.

4) Katy Perry I Kissed a Girl belt

Pop superstar Katy Perry wore this suede belt in the video for her breakthrough hit, “I Kissed a Girl”.

5) The Temptations handwritten musical score sheet

This is an original, handwritten score for the Temptations’ song “You’re My Everything”. It was written by their musical director, Cornelius Grant.
