5FM in hot water over anti-Israel advert

2011-02-04 22:25
Shaheema Barodien
Cape Town – 5FM has issued a statement addressing complaints the radio station received after airing an advert by Faithless band member Dave Randall which calls on listeners to boycott Israel.

The controversial advert draws parallels between apartheid South Africa and the state of Israel.

In the 30-second recording, Randall says that 20 years ago he would not have performed in apartheid South Africa, and refuses to play in Israel. He then pleads with listeners to join the international boycott against Israel and pledges his support for South African Artists Against Apartheid.

Faithless also released a statement distancing themselves from the advert. The statement says that the advert reflects Randall's personal views and was aired without the band's consent or prior knowledge. Faithless, who are currently on tour in South Africa, apologised for any offence it may have caused.

Cultural boycott

Randall is a guitarist for the UK band, which is primarily comprised of musicians Maxi Jazz, Sister Bliss and Rollo Armstrong. In August 2010, Faithless declined an invite to tour Israel in protest after Israeli forces stormed a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, killing 19 people. The band joined other artists such as Pink Floyd, Elvis Costello, Carlos Santana and Gorillaz in a cultural boycott of the country.

"5FM would like to reiterate that this advert and its contents, like any advert on the station, is the property of the advertiser who has paid for it," said Aisha Mohamed, 5FM Station Manager, in a statement. "The advert does not reflect the views of 5FM or the SABC," the statement continues.

The station was unable to give an exact number of complaints received as they were submitted via e-mail, telephone and social networking platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Complaints received by 5FM will be referred to the Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa and the station will await on their decision on whether or not the advert is permissible.

5FM said that until then, they will continue to air the advert.

"palestinian" terrorists kill innocent civilians. "palestinian" terrorists use their children as human shields. "palestinian" people were not expelled, they left when their "brothers" told them they would wipe out israel after which they could return - but they failed. "palestinian" people choose not to become israelis so why should they be allowed to vote? they are not citzens. "palestinian" terrorists destroy families, kill people and dont want peace. 1 billion Islamic religious followers who admittedly want to wipe Isreal off the map against 14 million Jewish followers worldwide. People wonder why they are so defensive considering the history of persecution and wars against the Jewish people ?

Hardly "hot water". With who? The usual serial complainers and trigger happy Facebook and Twitter addicts? Give us the facts... If the ASA considers the ad inappropriate, then fair enough, take it off the air. If this procedure works for Nando's, so it should be in this case. And frankly, good for Dave Randall and SA Artists Against Apartheid for getting the message out there...

      Alexis75 - 2011-02-05 00:09

~Hardly "hot water". With who?~ With their listeners, obviously. At least those who were offended and complained. 5fm has balls I'll give them that. Faithless have never been shy to share their political views so its odd that they wouldn't support Randall as others in the band share this view.

  • lovemusic - 2011-02-05 00:06

5FM why did you have to get involved in political crap.I hate you for that! Faithless is a has been group and have to make ridiculous statements in order to win closed minded people as fans. 5FM you have just lost a 30year fan of your station who has always supported you up till now.I'm sure others will follow. As cee lo green says F... you

Is it not the mans right to speak his mind or is freedom of speech also against the law in this country? You may choose to believe him and do as he asks or you are free to reject his appeal. And since when is a call for a boycot illegal and something to apoligise for? Bloody nonsense that others have to apoligise for things said by a man that he is allowed to say under the constitution.

After WW2 less than a million Jews lay claim to a land on which their ancestors hadn't set foot for nearly 2000 years. Picture yourself in the shoes of the people who lived there pre-1948. Picture your response to a bunch of visitors who come to your home land and tell you it now belongs to them. How can you be outraged by Mugabe for taking farm lands and not be outraged at Israel for doing this: http://sabbah.biz/mt/archives/2006/05/10/the-shrinking-map-of-palestine/ if I lived in Palestine in 1948 I'd be waging war on Israel too for one nation's terrorist is another's freedom fighter.

its pathetic how people only want to go back in history to a point n time whenthey THINK the jews kicked palestians out of the land and stole the land... yet they refuse to go back in history to the point where the JEWS were kicked off the very same land before any one else lived there.. so really if you were anti-apartheid, then you should be supporting the jews for trying to get the very land back that they were kicked out of..

You wrong Joey The indigenous people of the land were Jews around 2000 years before Islam was created... and they never left their land, they learned to share it... there were always Jews there through the years even though they were just 20% of the population in the 1930's. There was only a “Palestine” when the British were there (a land mix of Muslims Jews and Christians), before that it was owned by/controlled Ottomans, the Romans and before that the Jews (+/-5000 years). In the 1940’s when the British opend the Palestinian brigade to fight the Nazi's, who do you think joined? only Jews… that’s because the British called the Jews Palestinians, and the Arabs they called Arabs! fact! in 1948 the Arab population was told to leave the area by the Arab world, who promised them they would kill all the Jews... they didn’t manage to kill the Jews, and the Arabs couldn’t come back... however, Jews were kicked out in mass from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Morocco, Saudi, Lebanon, Tunisia, Syria and Yemen... but no one would care much for that, ye that’s right over one million Jews living in Arab countries were told to leave or be killed (that’s better than Hitler’s' demand tho... just kill) anyways these FACTS… but no one will remember nor care for this stuff, cause they are so brainwashed by propaganda today… an example of which, “Aisha Mohamed, 5FM Station Manager” No, im sorry, I am not surprised by this fact either, and no i am no racist like you want to call me...Its mathematics.

Zanu Just as a matter on interest: The area known as Israel and its surrounding area was mostly uninhabited for thousands of years due to it being a desert To the extent that hardly any water was available. About 2000 years ago the climate was wetter and more suitable for certain types of agriculture only. Archeological records indicates only small groups of wanderinf nomads moved through the area but did not settle there due to water restraints prior to the climatic change. This climatic change also affected the Demographics of Africa, especially the Sahara region.

Israel currently has 236 Jewish-only settlements and ‘outposts’ built on confiscated Palestinian land. Palestinians do not have any settlements on Israeli land. The Israeli unemployment rate is 6.4%, while the Palestinian unemployment in the West Bank is 16.5% and 40% in Gaza. Zero Israeli homes have been demolished by Palestinians and 24,813 Palestinian homes have been demolished by Israel since 1967. Israel has been targeted by at least 65 UN resolutions and the Palestinians have been targeted by none. During Fiscal Year 2009, the U.S. is providing Israel with at least $8.2 million per day in military aid and $0 in military aid to the Palestinians.

      not4sale2 - 2011-02-06 04:09

Ismail, let me address each of your points: - In 2005 Israel withdrew all its settlements from the Gaza Strip, in return ending up with Hamas'tan as a neighbour, which only increased the rocket fire into sovereign Israel and ultimately resulted in the operation in Gaza in 2008. The Israeli position in peace roadmaps has routinely been to compensate any future state of Palestine with contiguous land inside Israel for the largest blocks that will stay under Israel. - Israeli unemployment rates are relatively high by OECD standards but its strong economy is testament to the ingenuity of its people. Unemployment of the Palestinians is not for Israel to solve (although its blockade of Gaza does not help). fyi South Africa has higher unemployment than the West Bank. - It is clear that Israel will have unflattering home demolition stats, a result of coming under attack by borderline homes used as fronts for attacks on Israel. If Israel was not the strongest in the region, it'd have been wiped out 10 times over. - Do you know who the member countries of The UN Human Rights Council are that you correctly noted 'target' Israel, they are mostly ones with sterling human rights records, such as China, Cuba, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Uganda, etc. and they have a wonderful record of condemning Israel almost routinely while not issuing any statements on Zimbabwe, Sudan, Burma etc. - If it were not for, mainly US-, foreign aid training, the PA in the West Bank would not exist

Yeah, I see all this rubbish liberal comments against Israel. Typical brainwashed idiots than failed to think and to get their facts right. During WW2 nobody believed that millions of Jews were being slaughtered and when the evidence surfaced (yes, go do yourself a favour and visit the extermination camps in Germany)everyone said "we did not know". What is this with people that they always have this hatred towards Jews? These anti-Israel bashers are canon fodder for the Islamic propoganda machine. You are part of the non-thinker, a member of the sheep that you are.

      ismail - 2011-02-05 08:51

      Mister A - 2011-02-05 12:09

@Ismail - you are guilty of one not telling the whole truth when it comes to relating the story of Israel/Palestine. Funny how you demand it when someone opposes your argument. Rational argument states that Israel and Palestine were both created by the UN in 1948(as were many other Arab states) - but clearly the Palestinians and their allies chose war because they thought that they would win but instead were soundly beaten. Hence the ongoing problem. That is a fact and indeed rational argument.

      CtheTruth - 2011-02-06 11:04

@Ismail, you claim that the Palestinians never had anything to do with the holocaust? You are wrong. The grand mufti of Jerusalem, Mohammad Amin al-Husayni, was one of Hitler's main collaborators and recent evidence shows Hitler was planning on letting him run Israel once the Germans had conquered it. If you don't believe me read the wikipedia articel, or will you claim wikipedia is merely an instrument of zionists and americans? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Amin_al-Husayni

This comment section is getting filled with irony. Keep it up. My 5 cents just because I can: Zionism = Nationalist ideology. Simple enough, it excludes those who do not agree with its principals. Israel only democracy in Middle East = Sure, and when the Egyptians demand it on the streets, Israeli government dirty their pants because their best buddy, Mubarak, kept a tyrannical grip on his people. Ja, usual hypocrisy. Freedom of speech = Just ok when people say something that is pro-zionist or pro-palestinian? Seems you guys love those theocracies and dictatorships after all... So how about everyone getting over their hypocritical self-importance, take a chill pill and next time you don't like what you hear change the station, switch off the radio..... but stop dictating to the rest of us because it happens to offend your particular delusional ideology. And can both sides stop playing the victim card (holocaust, expelled, land taken blabla). It did not happen to any of you personally, so stop using other peoples misery to justify your own behaviour.... becoming like those idiots who still moan about apartheid to justify their crappy behaviour or those useless whites moaning about BEEEEEEE or whatever it is called now. And lastly, if you care so deeply about Israel/Palestine why don't you bugger off and go stay there instead of annoying us with your issues.

      mike881 - 2011-02-05 10:04

Well said Odin. I'm sick of both sides claiming that they are snow white - Both sides use selective facts to justify the abuse committed by BOTH sides. This is what freedom of expression and choice is all about!

Although I certainly don't agree with the self-righteous and undemocratic way Israel goes about some of its business, it is also not fitting for 5FM(SABC), to air these kinds of opinion. If 5FM was a totally independent radio station it would be different matter - it would simply be a personal viewpoint and Israel must take it from it comes.

  • Jon - 2011-02-05 09:26

I think that people, or groups of people should, have the freedom to voice their opinion. I am an Israeli citizen and I dont agree with Randall's parallel between Apartheid South Africa and Israel, but I honestly do not take acception to his opinion, nor his (or the advertisers) right to voice it. The advert is done in a tasteful way in my opinion, it does not contain hate speech or aggressive overtones. Instead of pro-Israel listeners phoning in and complaining, they should consider flighting a rebuff to Randall's advert, in a like minded, anti-antagonistic manner of course Jonathan Selby

  • arnoyoung - 2011-02-05 09:31

What's worse is that station manager ' Aisha ' says they have no control over the add. So if I make an add about raping woman, sodomising children, cutting throats, then dear Aisha will air it!? I think not! Aisha is reponsible and 5 FM should have her make an public apology.

      Mister A - 2011-02-05 10:22

South Africa has a large and increasingly prominent Muslim population. It is to be expected that the anti-semitic feeling and propaganda in the country would increase accordingly. This is because the Muslims sees themselves and others of the same religion as kin first and formost and any other identity is secondary to that. Therefore I am not surprised that 'Aisha' has no control over the ad. Look too at the UJ - same thing there

      Andy49 - 2011-02-05 19:09

not forgetting that 5fm is under the SABC banner & is therefore controlled by the ANC. She will/is using that parties tactic of denial, next she will also state that she was mis-quoted & taken out of context. Change stations like I did when they started to get rid of their stalwart radio jocks & replaced them with boring, self gratification morons.

It is amusing how some people keep sending the exact same comment several times in a row as if repetition of their arguments would increase their veracity. As to who has the "right" to occupy certain lands, history shows huge changes of occupational patterns. At one time, Swedes used to occupy part of Russia, Mongols used to occupy large parts of China, so-called natiev Amercians (i.e. "Indians") used to occupy most of North America, Incas used to occupy large parts of South America. Yet some say that God as the greatest estate agent gave a certain land to the Jews and everyone must accept that. No, I am not anti-Israel, and indeed people used to initially sympathize with the Israelian settlers who created orange groves where nothing bloomed before and a modern state in a desert. Only these days has become clear as to what the price for this developent was and who had to pay it.

Rev Desmond Tutu called for a boycott of Israel some times back. Our local Trade Unions also refuse to offload Israeli goods. Congratulation to 5FM for airing the Boycott Israel advert. The Boycott Israel campaign is gaining momentum through out the world The boycott should be blanket not only cultural. Remember Apartheid South Africa was defeated through boycott and so will be Apartheid Israel. As for many of the complaints received by Radio 5FM and a host of comments here are from the Zionist subsidised network of pro Apartheid Israel.

      Mister A - 2011-02-05 12:13

  • Elzaan - 2011-02-05 11:48

I am sick and tired of people giving their opinion on "apartheid Israel" without visiting the country for themselves to see what is going on. Instead they choose to believe media propaganda and then have the audacity to speak as if they know what is going on! Well, I actually visisted Israel last year and I can tell you one thing; all is not as the media will have us believe! Did you know for instance that no Jew/Israeli is allowed to enter ANY Palistinian teritory while ALL Palistinians are allowed by the Israeli governemnt to enter into ALL Jewish sectors and even the Jewish Holy Sites!! Who is busy with Apartheid? It whould seem to me that we can rather call it Apartheid Palistine! Do not confuse security measures taken by the Israeli Government as Apartheid! Whenever restrictions are made on Palistinians, it is for the security of every Israeli citizen. Tell me, have you ever heard of a Jewish suicide bomber killing innocent Palistinian woman and children? No! But I have sure as hell heard of Palistinian Jihadist who have no respect for civilian life. Wouldn't you do the same if you were the Israeli government? The restrictions are also on all Israeli citizens as well as tourists. You can't even enter a shopping mall without being searched. That is not because they have anything against certain ethnic or regligeous groups, it is plainly a case of security. I am sick and tired of certain groups of people always crying "racists"& Apartheid!

      BernieK - 2011-02-05 12:17

Elzaan I fully agree with you. There is a very one-sided stance towards Israel and also against the West in general. Everyone wants to emmigrate to Europe, the US, Australia, Canada and yes even Israel because of a certain living standard. However you do not see that millions of Europeans would like to emmigrate to oppresive Pakistan, China, north Africa, other dicatorships such as Iran and North Korea or darkest Africa, no you do not see that trend. Why not? Because there is no freedom in these countries, there is no enlightened thinking. What you do see from all the above backward societies is a begging bowl and a demand for more and more. Palistine can get a grip on themselves, they can if they want to shed their relationship with oppresive Syria and oppresive Iran etc, yes, once they take a different stance then they will be welcomed and there could be a genuine move in the right direction, but I am afraid they will not. There is peer pressure amongst themselves to play the role of the underdog and to continue to do so ad infinitum, just as the beggar at the traffic light. They do NOT want to take responsibility for their own problems and shortcomings, no it is always the fault of someone else, just as here in SA. Always appartheid, always the colonialist, always the white man, and when the white man has departed then the Chinese and Indian will be blamed but NEVER themselves. People in Europe and elsewhere must harden their attitude towards these passengers of society.

      amos - 2011-02-05 13:29

As for your comment "have you ever heard of a Jewish suicide bomber killing innocent Palistinian woman and children? No! But I have" I have heard of the the Jews killing THOUSANDS of innocent women and children. More recently in Gaza and before that in Lebanon and before that..the list goes on..The Jews are using Tanks, American Fighter Jets etc to butcher women & children. Whilst Hitler is remembered for butchering the Jews the Zionist Jews will be remembered amongst other atrocities for BUTCHERING women, babies & other children. As for complaints received by Radio 5FM most of these must be from the Zionist subsidised network of puppets of Apartheid Israel

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 in 1947 decidedon the Future Government of Palestine. The resolution recommended the termination of the British Mandate for Palestine and the partition of the territory into two states, one Jewish and one Arab, with the Jerusalem-Bethlehem area being under special international protection, administered by the United Nations The proposed plan was accepted by the leaders of the Jewish community in Palestine, through the Jewish Agency. However, the plan was rejected by leaders of the Arab community. On 29 November 1947, the United Nations General Assembly voted 33 to 13, with 10 abstentions, in favour of the Partition Plan.

      BernieK - 2011-02-05 14:25

Amos, you are one of the non-thinkers unfortunately. Where is the cry for a blanket boycott against repressive regimes such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Pakistan, Egypt, Libia, Algeria, Iran, Syria, Somalia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Venenzuela, Mauritania, Marocco, Niger, Mali, DRC, the list is long.. Where is YOUR cry for absolute freedom in these countries!? Why are YOU silent about the repression of free thought and freedom of women in these countries. For freedom of association? No, you are silent because YOU are part of that problem. One-sided judgement. You judge Israel, a country of 7 million people, but you fail to mention a single word about the pathetic mess of non-democracy in the above mentioned countries. You are a brainwashed fool and idiot!

      lldoidge - 2011-02-05 16:50

You obviously didn't and still don't know what apartheid is! Then again, with people like you that support dictatrships is it any wonder!

  • goyougoodthing - 2011-02-05 12:54

Good on him. Israel as a state only exists because of the USA backing them. The way they treat Palestinians according to the wiki cables, is even worse than we imagined.

      lldoidge - 2011-02-05 16:47

Have you been to Israel or Gaza or the West Bank goyougoodthing? Just asking as you seem such an expert! NOT!

  • lakhan7 - 2011-02-05 13:39

  • Albert - 2011-02-05 14:20

A name like Faithless?? LOL. Must be deeply religious. Their music is Kak anyway.

      lldoidge - 2011-02-05 16:45

Who are this Faithless band? What do they sing. I've never heard of them!

  • Albert - 2011-02-05 14:25

Goyouanthing, you don't like Jews obviously.

      goyougoodthing - 2011-02-05 15:11

I generalise to make a point (see below again). I don't judge whole nations I judge the individual. But if you want me to then let's see: Jews have double standards. Christians have double standards. Muslims have double standards. We all have double standards. Do I identify with and understand Judaism? No but I also don't identify with Zulu culture, Xhosa culture, Hindu, Muslim, Christian, coloured, American Indian, Pakistani Afrikaans and most other white English South Africans as I am not religious and I don't feel sorry for myself. Do I mind if they live next door to me - of course not unless they throw wild parties every night and are insensitive to others. Do you understand my point? All religions, including the Jew are being childish and pathetic. Get over yourselves will you and get on, your neighbours faith or behaviour cannot have an effect on your faith unless yours is very weak to begin with.

  • comeonnow - 2011-02-05 14:34

Its the most hypocrytical campaign ever. If Dave Randall really was boycotting Israel properly, he would have to avoid using any of the 1000s of Israeli inventions he most probably uses for his own music/health/communication/LIFE everyday!!! See the following 3 site for list of Israeli inventions: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Israeli_inventions_and_discoveries http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1600302/posts http://www.israel21c.org/didyouknow/didyouknow

  • rubinssa - 2011-02-05 14:38

Oh, good ol' Israel, that ubiquitous punching bag of the world. Who created Israel? Anti-semitism! Shame, they do the utmost to protect themselves against their murderous neighbours and now they are branded as proponents of 'apartheid'. Their neighbours have ZERO democracy, ZERO human rights, ZERO respect for other religions or thought, but no.... poor Israelis are 'the terrorists'. Double standards? Suggestion: go on a brief trip to Israel. See people of all races and cultures walking, praying, eating freely - thanks ONLY to the IDFs protective capability. Have Israelis ever destroyed mosques or symbols of other peoples religion? No! Has the same respect been extended to them by their neighbours and anywhere else in the world? Err, not quite! Do Israelis teach hate to school-kids? No. Arabs do, sadly. There will only be peace in Israel when Arabs love their own more than they hate Jews.

      goyougoodthing - 2011-02-05 15:02

See there is the problem with Jews, you whinge too much. It's one long never ending Woody Allen tragedy.

      Jon Doe - 2011-02-05 19:12

@goyougoodthing. You are whinging right now biatch!

  • Brett - 2011-02-05 14:38

@ za101 - Seeing u love the palestians so much u come live next to Gaa in a place call Sederot - which has constant bombardment day and night of mortars rockets and missels launched from within the peace loving Gaza strip. And have your family run for shelter every time an attack is launched. Yes the palenstianias do live under these conditions, however the arabs have not made themselves partnes of peace. I dont blame either side in this conflict as no-one has been innocent or the good one - both sides have blood on their hands. However your statement - eople living in the west bank and gaza are under the control of israel but cant vote in elections - is totall bull as they can vote for Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Fatah or any other group - as there being election violence between the parties how do we epect peace.

  • ShaunSwindon@24.com - 2011-02-05 14:50

None of you people actually know history it seems. According to the TORAH it says quite clearly that the Jewish people will be HOMELESS and LANDLESS until the Messiah arrives and leads them eventually into the land of milk and honey. Until then Jews are meant to live amongst other nations and learn lessons from them and how to be peaceful as punishment for their sins before. Dont believe me then maybe this Rabbi can explain more clearly? Go watch this video then and try also read your own holy book ie: the TORAH.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y48cYB89FXU Case closed. According to the Torah Israel is an illegal state. Its that simple.

      ShaunSwindon@24.com - 2011-02-05 15:06

Here is another video from the Fox News interview.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjWAGscG7rs

      Alfred - 2011-02-05 15:35

the torah is a book of primitive superstitions and mythology depicting a God which is without a doubt the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, megalomaniacal, sadistic, capriciously malevolent bully. It was writen by primitive goat herders in the bronze age. Only a complete imbecile would ever consider it as history.

      Alfred - 2011-02-05 15:36

only retarded rednecks watch fox news

      ShaunSwindon@24.com - 2011-02-05 19:10

Regardless I do not follow religious books to lead my life BUT almost every person who lives in Israel does the deeds they do...good or bad under the pretence that their "god" has instructed them and guided them to this "promised land". Problem is the part of their scriptures which nobody dares mention that their "god" specifically instructed them NOT to claim any land for their own. Surely if they foillow the Torah so closely they would understand that? On another note Alfred I dont believe the "god" which they talk about in the Torah, the Bible or the Qur'an is actually the God I believe in. I agree with you. The god mentioned in the "holy" books sound more like things a Human might do and not a creator God which in my opinion is all about love and balance ;)

      ShaunSwindon@24.com - 2011-02-05 19:19

If you actually watched the interview you will see that you are right and how retarded the interviewer. Besides a racist by saying that "black" South Africans are far more forgiving than Muslims....idiot.

  • Reveal Them - 2011-02-05 16:12

This propaganda machine that is mentioned below is obviously working for them. I know nothing about the region except that there has never been substancial peace since the very early biblical times. If this propaganda machine is wrong then start one that reflects the real truth not a one sided effort.
