7 quick questions with Afrikaans singer Jo Black

Cape Town – Afrikaans singer Jo Black released his debut album, titled Skepe, in April this year. And just six weeks later, his album reached gold status, surpassing 15 000 albums sold.

The video for his debut single and hit, Skepe, which was released in December 2016, is also standing on more than one million views after just five months.

We caught up with Jo, who is making waves in music industry, as he's prepping for two big events, Liefde by die Arena in Cape Town and Liefde by die Dam in Johannesburg.

Check out our 7 quick questions with Jo:

Your debut album recently reached gold status after just 6 weeks, congrats! Did you expect your album to do so well in such a short space of time?

Thank you, I had a personal target of selling 15 000 copies for the year. So I was quite blown away when I heard the news.

You’re a motivational speaker and a musician, do you bring the two together when you perform, or do you keep them separate?

I've never really seen myself as a motivational speaker. I only share what's on my heart, and it seems that people find inspiration from that. I work my stories into my shows, so they basically go hand in hand.

Who or what has been the biggest musical influence in your life?

Music that speak to your heart, soul and ears is what I like. To hear a message or story through music, it has to move you. I reckon growing up I listened to anything from punk to blues and took something from all of it.

What CD is in your car at the moment?

I have Roan van As, Dewald Wasserfall, Ed Sheeran and Twee in my car. Depending on what mood I'm in.

What is the one thing no one knows about you?

I once had an arm wrestling match with Superman. The loser is supposed to wear his underpants over his clothes for the rest of his life.

What can people expect from your performance at the Liefde by die Arena show?

I am a storyteller, I like people to hear the stories behind the songs, and I'm playing with my full band so they can expect an energetic rock show.

What’s next for you?

Wow, so many things are happening at the moment. A couple of surprises for the fans and a lot of shows throughout the year.
