A quickie with local band Zebra and Giraffe

Cape Town - SAMA Award Best Rock winners 2014, Zebra and Giraffe, are on tour and will release their new album Knuckles soon, so we took this opportunity to find out what their new music sounds like and how this acoustic tour differs from what they've done before.

Channel24:
"It’s been 6 years and a whole lot of touring since the release of your debut album, Collected Memories in 2008. What you have learnt about the music scene in SA?"

Z&G:
"We’ve learnt a lot a long the way; we’ve really cut our teeth here. The SA scene is definitely a great place to hone your craft and it’s always a pleasure travelling around this beautiful country of ours. It does however have its limits, especially when it comes to alternative genres. The lack of purpose-built music venues is a massive problem…."

Channel24:
"Tell us about the sounds on your new album Knuckles, what inspired it?"

Z&G:
"We’ve been working on this project for a long time. It all started back when we changed the line-up, putting Mike Wright on drums and Stef Henrico on bass. We also started working with a new producer named Shy, and she really helped us move into a new headspace creatively and as a group.
The lyrics, as always, were inspired by my personal life and the things I was going through at the time. A lot of the stuff is more positive than The Wisest Ones and represents a happier time in my life. I’d also just moved to Cape Town when I started writing so that definitely had an effect!"

Channel24:
"What challenge do acoustic shows pose?"

Z&G:
"Acoustic shows are tough because they’re so personal and intimate. The audience is right in front of you listening to every word and sound. It’s a lot more exposing. In the same breath though, I’d say that’s also the best part. You’re really able to connect and not hide behind a wall of sound and lights.
The really hard part is playing an acoustic show in a rowdy venue. Then you’re trying to give an intimate performance to a noisy and often disconnected crowd."

Channel24:
"What is the one secret that no one knows about the band?"

Z&G:
"Well everyone except me is really into custom/classic motorcycles. And when I say "into"I mean fairly obsessed! It’s what they talk about most of the time, leaving me to twiddle my thumbs!"

Channel24:
"What’s next for you guys?"

Z&G:
"Right now we’re just finishing up the acoustic tour and then focusing solely on rolling out the new material. We also have a whole bunch of rad festival dates lined up for spring that we’re really excited to play!"
