And the theme for Oppikoppi 2014 is…

2014-03-25 13:10
Cape Town - Oppikoppi announced the theme for its 20th annual rock festival to be held in Northam in the North West on Tuesday.

Every year the Oppikoppi team delivers a original theme to underpin the festival, and this year is no different.

The theme for Oppikoppi 20 is The Odyssey.

The theme stemmed from the fact that Oppikoppi turns 20 this year, but who better to explain it than the Oppikoppi peeps themselves? So here it goes:

"Contrary to most people’s expectations, including the family’s own, we have survived 20 years.

OPPIKOPPI: 1994 - 2014 – Just think about that. Not bad for an opening statement.

Against the police, for the police, amongst the policeless (mostly), creating police and permutations of policii not easily captured in the English lexicon.

In the small bar.

With one or both or all eyes closed tightly. Arms around a moving body (Hold me fast). Diving forth.

And we lived.

And all of you friendly Soft Africans with a hooligan party disposition, has built the story with us.

Then a friend of ours said there were equally descriptive journeys in the past (Although he did admit that there were no double-decker buses driving over the knees of well-endowed Mediterranean demi-gods 3000 years ago. Athena thought it short sighted.)

But the themes sounded similar:

The entire Trojan campaign lasted 10 years, thereafter Odysseus / Ulysses travelled another 10 more until he was reunited with Penelope on his home island Ithaca.

10 + 10 = 20

OppiKoppi (without sheep) = Odyssey (with sheep) Even if you are not mathematically inclined, the connections sounded too good to be true.

So, with that, please rise and give a really warmly clapping of the hands, for here we have Miss OppiKoppi 2014: THE ODYSSEY."

The Odyssey concept was crafted by the AAA School of Advertising (CPT) and the images for the campaign was designed by Louis Minnaar.

OppiKoppi The Odyssey details:

7 – 9 August 2014 (the public holiday now falls on a Saturday so you’ll need to take one day leave from work)
