Arthur: Brown Dash 'rescued kwaito'

2012-05-10 08:20
Cape Town - Arthur Mafokate, who is better known as just Arthur, has called the late Brown Dash a "kwaito legend".

Arthur posted the following message on his Twitter page late on Wednesday:

"Rest In Peace Kwaito Legend - One of the few people to win a SAMA Song of the year award"

Arthur also told Timeslive that Brown Dash "rescued kwaito".

"I used to tell him he had potential. But then he went on to help rescue kwaito and won the Song of the Year award and inspired a lot of kids," said Arthur.

Arthur spent Wednesday night reminiscing, writing "Watching the SAMA awards performance by Spikiri, late Brown Dash & @BrickzMabrigado recorded by Owami on my phone :-( #RIPBrownDash" on his Twitter page.

Arthur was the host at this year's SAMAs.

Tributes

Other personalities and musicians have also taken to Twitter to remember Brown Dash.

Comedian David Kau tweeted: "RT @Stunkie: RT @XolisaDyeshana: Sending strength to the mother, father, family and friends of Brown Dash. Another SA'n talent gone too soon"

"Came out of another musician friend's memorial service to hear of Brown Dash's passing. It's all a little surreal now..." wrote Loyiso Bala on the social networking site.

5FM jock DJ Fresh simply retweeted @TSRecords with a sad face:":-( RT @TSRecordsSA: Rest In Peace Sphiwe "Brown Dash" Mpamile #GoneTooSoon

TS Records have changed their Twitter page background to a photo of Brown Dash.

Brown Dash died on Wednesday after reportedly suffering with ill health for some time. He died eight years to the day after SA music legend Brenda Fassie.

@ Itu...I personally think we should move away from wanting to know what killed a person. It is a family matter. He is no more and is not coming back. Yes we loved hime and will miss him. RIP ngqina lam.

My heartfelt condolenses to his family. Sphiwe 'Brown Dash' during his prime became a household name, not only to his friends and neighbours but to the youth (nationally) what saddened thereafter was when some of his frnds started dis owning him when, realising that some of his resources were fading away. Some music producers gained richness at his expense. Now it's been even said that durng his time of ailment, his name was not talk of the time anymore. His soul rest, but his speeches and his music shall remain with us (fans) eternally. Akwehlanga lungehli.

  • Peter - 2012-05-10 08:47

RIP to this young kwaito legend. Now, his supporters deserve to know what killed him. If it's AIDS, let's use this as an awareness.

      Florence - 2012-05-10 12:41

If by now u are not aware of AIDS I bet u will never be Dash's death wont make a difference in South Africa we are all very much aware of this Epidemic we are just ignorant & the last time i checked we were told that u diclose ur status only if u want & comfertable to do so they dont owe us nothing all i can say to the Mpamile's he was brave he looked death strait in the eye and fought even thou he knew he was not going to win this one but he gave it his best shot unfortunately he lost the battle Hamba Dash its okay !!!!

      Peter - 2012-05-10 15:41

Pure nonsense, his voice is much louder than the average man on the streets. He was a role model to our kids, all his music sales arise from the fans, they deserve to know. Big ups to Zombo and Khabzela who had the energy to tell their fans what was killing them.

  • Sanda - 2012-05-10 08:58

      Just - 2012-05-10 11:26

I fully agree with you Mashudu these days it's like it's more important for our ppl to know what killed someone instead of griving with the family,I meaning your knowledge of their death what difference will it make in your life, what happened to respecting the departed...I think it's about time people grow up and realise that death is death nomater how it comes the pain is no less.

  • shandukane.moshatana - 2012-05-10 09:31

people are crazy and they dont respect the dead all u care abt is what killed him.shame on you prople of mzantsi you are heartless...he died for him not for us to learn.if we want to learn then then we must go back to school or the clinics and google all the sickness we are at risk of,not to examine DASH for our own rescue SIS mzantsi

  • Wisani Wisco Maphata - 2012-05-10 09:32

  • howard.komati - 2012-05-10 09:48

He was decent bt like any township guy who grew up in the street obviously u have to be streetwise. He had passion for music and enjoyed listening to his own. I remember how he used to tell me abt Zola and the respect he had for him. Tht was Dash giving accolades nt being jealous. Rest in peace.

      Florence - 2012-05-10 12:43

      Well said
