Johannesburg – Chris Chameleon
is bringing his first Ingrid Jonker stage production to this year's Aardklop festival in Potchefstroom.
Chameleon, together with Riaan van Rensburg (Noot vir Noot
) on the drums and Adriaan Brand (Springbok Nude Girls) on trumpet and keyboard, breathes life into this new stage production, Klank van Jou Oë
This follows Chameleon's two successful Ingrid Jonker albums, Ek Herhaal Jou
(2005) and As Jy Weer Skryf
According to Chameleon, Jonker taught him that Afrikaans music doesn't have to sound simple, recipe-based and childish with a bunch of English words thrown into the mix.Everything backwards
Afrikaans can sound real, but the idea needs to be fresh and new, says Chameleon, like the filming of his new music video for As Jy Weer Skryf.
"I wanted to draw a comparison between the song and Ingrid." Chameleon does everything backwards in the video for a scene where he has to fall into the sea, and then rises dry from it. Consequently he had to learn the lyrics backwards for the concept to work.
"To learn a whole song's lyrics backwards and to sing it at two times the speed was very difficult. I had to practise every day for two weeks for that two minute section."
The video has made headlines since its release and Chameleon is in demand locally and overseas with 2000 shows in 19 countries over 15 years under his belt.Watch As Jy Weer Skryf here:
