Coenie de Villiers honoured

Cape Town - Singer Coenie de Villiers was honoured for his longtime contribution to Afrikaans music on Saturday.

"This is a great honour. I was very surprised," De Villiers said on Sunday.

The Huisgenoot Skouspel award for a lifetime contribution to Afrikaans music was awarded to him in the Sun City Superbowl at the weekend.

"I can't exactly say why they chose to give me the prize, but if they give it, I will take it and be grateful."

'I miss Lucas'

He is very excited about his new album, Hart Van Glas, which was launched recently.

"After all these years I think it (his music) at least starts to sound a little like something."

He describes the people who had the biggest influence on his career as "good friends" and mentioned Lucas Maree, Koos du Plessis and David Kramer among others.

"I miss Lucas. He was really a good friend."

He will focus on the launch of Hart Van Glas for now and he believes it will keep him busy.

True artist

Ilza Roggeband, author of the book 50 Stemme: Die Grootste Name in Afrikaanse Musiek, said it is commendable that De Villiers has always been willing to work with other artists.

"He is also a much better singer and pianist than he gives himself credit for."

According to Kramer, he and De Villiers became friends in the 1980s when they toured together.

"Coenie can get his audience to think, because his songs have beautiful lyrics.

"You get two kinds of singers: those who are artists and those who are entertainers.

"Coenie is a true artist," said Kramer.
