Die Antwoord turn down Lady Gaga tour

2012-03-13 12:43
Cape Town - Rap duo Die Antwoord have blasted pop queen Lady Gaga, reports MTV news.

They told the music channel that Lady Gaga had invited them to join her tour, but they refused.

"Lady Gaga asked us to tour with her and we were like, um, no thanks," said lead singer, Ninja.

They went on to claim that they left their previous record label, Interscope Records, because they tried to change them into a "shitty" pop group in the mould of Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas.

Lead singer Ninja was quoted saying: "I think they thought we were just like a weird, strange act, then like 'Let's just let them have their fun for a while, and then when it comes to their second album we'll have them play games'.

"They were looking at Lady Gaga and The Black Eyed Peas and that type of shitty pop music, and were thinking we could like twist into that."

The Cape Town rave-rap group also stated that they had nothing against pop music: "We like making pop music, but we like making hardcore music at the same time, mixing them, but they've got, like, soul. It's not like weak, superficial shit. You know?"

      J-Man - 2012-03-13 15:08

      What? Lady Gaga sucks.

      Gomoco - 2012-03-13 21:52

no not big headed sticking to what they want to be and believe in, i don't like them but i say good for them

      Jacob - 2012-03-14 03:49

Ja...whatever. They wish!! Publicity stunt from them. Lady Gaga has more fame and fortune than they could ever dream of

      Jonathon - 2012-03-14 08:29

Big Headed?? No ways, I might not dig their stuff but I admire them sticking to their roots not becoming corporate sellouts!!!

  • Charmaine Paterson - 2012-03-13 13:02

Their novelty value too shall pass.

      clivecorbz - 2012-03-13 13:44

Is that why Ninja won a SAMA in 1994?

      djmain1 - 2012-03-13 13:58

Goodness knows why - they're crap!

      Sloragoth - 2012-03-13 15:25

Well, they're not crap. I just don't like their music.

      Martin - 2012-03-13 16:29

not in this lifetime, cant say i like their stuff, but i appreciate their point, and yeaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh ninja, tell em where to stick it, be your own,

      hylton.kloka - 2012-07-28 00:32

Sama awards mean nothing. Nor do Emmy's, Grammies or anything else. Longevity and being a household name twenty years after your debut, are what make professional musicians and performers. Anything else, while famous at the time, are just flash in the pan.

  • Derde - 2012-03-13 13:03

janee, commin se moses. Oor 'n jaar is julle op die klippies en coke trein na nerens.

  • Nurse - 2012-03-13 13:07

I'm sure Lady Gaga is losing much sleep over this... not. This lot are a total embarrassment for SA, nothing but real trailer park trash. The joke is on the Americans who don't see what we do.

      bluzulu - 2012-03-13 13:15

Your pic is the cover to my Blink 182 CD. Jenna jameson with the glove....gotta be GOOD.

      Christopher - 2012-03-13 13:55

One thing for sure yolandi is very hot in a freaky way...perhaps a bit jeolous nursey?

      clivecorbz - 2012-03-13 13:57

If you think they're trailer trash, and can't see that they're an act. Then the joke is on you I'm afraid.

      Peter - 2012-03-13 14:17

@bluzulu not Jenna Jameson, its actually Janine Lindemulder on the cover of the Blink 182 CD

  • Roann - 2012-03-13 13:09

    well done keep it real

  • johncarlos.biza - 2012-03-13 13:10

They'll be haunted by their decision in 15 years time when their money and album sales have dried up.

      brendonml - 2012-03-13 21:53

money in exchange for life and soul??? how boring.

      Vaaldonkie - 2012-03-14 10:26

I won't miss a chance to agree with mister Biza. It's not like they turned down someone with talent like Lenny Kravitz. They turned down the chick who doesn't know the difference between raw meat and cotton. They're the same.

  • Christopher - 2012-03-13 13:10

Good on you Die Antwoord...Lady Gaga is kuk...so run of the mill music you would have blown your credibility...rock on!!

  • newelld - 2012-03-13 13:13

LOL!!!! "But first, daaai antwoooord"... Made me laugh.

  • SaTyRLoliCoN - 2012-03-13 13:16

According to an interview they did for SABC about a year ago, Die Antwoord aren't planning on being around for anything longer than four years. Apparently, they want to go with it full-time for that shortish period, then quit. At least they have some kind of artistic integrity. Going "pop" means they cannot include their colorful language use intact.

  • bluzulu - 2012-03-13 13:16

    Die wannabe's

      Gregory Wells-Clifton - 2012-03-13 13:25

I wonder what they smoked (this time). Complete rubbish (them and their alleged invitaton). Note the tone in the article - they aren't being trusted to be telling the truth by whoever wrote the article. Wannabe's indeed.

      Christopher - 2012-03-13 13:51

I see bluzulu and gregory are very jeolous, ag sistog...

      clivecorbz - 2012-03-13 14:20

I fail to see which other musician they are trying to be like?

      J-Man - 2012-03-13 16:00

What I fail to see is how Gregory knows all this....

  • Steve - 2012-03-13 13:17

What??? A collaboration with Celine Dion... Can you just imagine???

      Donnae - 2012-03-13 13:25

i know i was thinking the same! they are just messing with us!

  • leigh.ridgway - 2012-03-13 13:20

These freaks of nature are fine ones to talk! Their image is hideous and their music even worse! Thank God they turned Lady Gaga down, they would have only managed to taint her amazing image anyway! Nobody wants to hold a candle to sh*t!

      Vaaldonkie - 2012-03-13 13:47

Between Die Antwoord and Lady Gaga, it's hard to tell who's the candle and who's the doo-doo.

      clivecorbz - 2012-03-13 14:22

Lady Gaga, cause she takes herself seriously.

      Vaaldonkie - 2012-03-13 15:31

No-one who wears a dead cow to a formal function can claim to be taking themselves seriously.

  • Luke - 2012-03-13 13:20

how about being proud of SA music....pricks

      Jou - 2012-03-13 13:25

      Agreed.

      Marius - 2012-03-13 13:29

Thank you Luke. They don't even realise they are advertising their ignorance and stupidity with their stupid comments.

      Vaaldonkie - 2012-03-13 13:36

I respect Jack Parow, but not Die Antwoord. What can you learn from this?

      celeste.rsa - 2012-03-13 14:03

I am proud of SA music......we have some awesome musicians, but Die Antwoord, I'm afraid there's just nothing to be proud of.

      leigh.ridgway - 2012-03-13 14:05

I would be proud IF I had something to be proud of! They sound retarded! Most South Africans have the ability to lose their accent when singing, but not these boneheads 'wiff' their filthy mouths and inability to make decent music that South Africans can be proud of! Marius, ignorance and stupidity??? Really! Hahahaha, you listen to their crap don't you? NOW whose ignorant and stupid!

      clivecorbz - 2012-03-13 14:26

Ridg... You think those accents are real? Ninja is pretty damn English! So you're the one who's ignorant in this case.

      clivecorbz - 2012-03-13 14:28

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2E-eb0AnA_E&feature=related Call him a bonehead after listening to that... Go on...

      Jou - 2012-03-13 14:51

It's obvious that they're exaggerating the accent. Man there are some real goons on this site.

      patrick.saunders123 - 2012-03-13 15:28

I stopped being proud of SA music the first time Steve Hofmeyr opened his mouth to sing.

      Luke - 2012-03-14 10:33

@clivecorbz Well done atleast 1 person knows! @ridg01 look up max normal on youtube same guy (no accent) do your research before putting down your pointless comments hope you feel like an idiot

  • Vaaldonkie - 2012-03-13 13:24

Two years from now, die Antwoord will die in a three-way fistfight with Dozi and Jack parow over a schedule mix up at the Pofadder culture festival.

      Francois - 2012-03-13 13:50

Firstly LOL! Ek laaik daai.

      patrick.saunders123 - 2012-03-13 15:29

Never happen. People from Pofadder have no culture.

      ernest.gouws - 2012-03-13 18:50

At least Dozi can speak proper English, Afrikaans and Zulu. More that can be said about these jobos. Can't construct a sentence without the word- LIKE.

  • eric.vanvuuren - 2012-03-13 13:39

    Go Ninja!!!

  • don.albert.architect - 2012-03-13 13:40

I am with them! Do it KLF style and then vanish into thin air. Much better!

  • Steve - 2012-03-13 13:43

Yo Whackhead - time for a remix!

  • Francois - 2012-03-13 13:49

It's not so strange to their SA fans. Die Antwoord became famous at Oppikoppi, and the SA rock crowd is not fond of Lady Ga Ga. Why I don't know. But Ninja obviously knows where his roots are, and that he will one day (maybe soon) have to return here.

  • Luke - 2012-03-13 13:53

Just cant believe that people are standing up for lady gaga over die antwoord...you don'thave to like their music just show them respect they deserve, they've accomplished more than many s.a artist couldn't! they had a good idea and made it work! @ridg01 your're pathetic! calling them "freaks" who are you too judge, you dont even know them! jealous of their success.

  • alobar.prunesqualler - 2012-03-13 13:54

Good on you Ninja! Stay pure to what you want to do. As you said in your Sunday Times interview, the worst thing you did for money was open for Linkin Park. I like that attitude. I think you are very clever marketers of your music and deserve the success you've built for yourself. I don't know how you stay 'in character' during interviews, but I really like it. You are doing for SA music what punk did for the UK in the 80's :))

  • Ally - 2012-03-13 13:54

Up Die Antwoord!!! Lady Gaga should be the support act on your tour.

  • Selogilwe Rabbah Rre Sekwenyane - 2012-03-13 13:55

So they big y b opening act if u can have your own tour!

  • Helio - 2012-03-13 13:56

Delusions of grandeur........pride comes before they disappear into nothingness

  • Jahinata - 2012-03-13 14:04

Wait, they think their music has soul? Everything about them shouts 'gimmick'! I don't hate their music but lets call a spade a spade alright?

  • David - 2012-03-13 14:08

Love Die Antwoord. Their fan base will even love them more now. Die Antwoord knows to rather piss of 99%, but get a hardcore following of 1% since the actual sales are still better than trying to compete in mainstream. Nice!

  • alwynb - 2012-03-13 14:09

well actually...I'm not a fan of their music BUT it does have something! In fact, you call it trailer trash etc, but I think they are more in touch with SA's reality than most of us even if we like to think ourselves higher than.. and lastly, I think they are artists 1st and money is not their main priority. Do 1st what you love and it will love you back. Don't sell your soul for money.

  • ernest.gouws - 2012-03-13 14:40

    Give that man a "Klippies"

  • heinrich.crouse - 2012-03-13 16:23

Good call. Now milk it for all it's worth! I would have lost respect for these punch rockers if they opened for goofy gaga. She's pop - by definition mediocre and easily digested. Die Antwoord is not.

  • Dumisani - 2012-03-13 16:52

    One time

  • daniel.w.gie - 2012-03-13 18:16

this is one strange boytjie ...from the jungles of Jozzie , I presume ..?

  • Jacob - 2012-03-14 03:49

Ja...whatever. They wish!! Publicity stunt from them. Lady Gaga has more fame and fortune than they could ever dream of

  • Lwando Zondwa-Ziintshaba Poni - 2012-03-14 06:42

What? lol, #smh... I never understand why people like to insult other people by considering what they like as 'trash'. I think people love to jump on the 'rebel ship' to seem different or unique which is self defeating, sad

  • dlouw84 - 2012-03-14 09:26

Jealousy makes you nasty, in your face! Daar is nie 'n enkele Suid-Afrikaanse kunstenaar (hede of verlede) wat kan kers vashou by Die Antwoord nie! So get out of the kitchen if you cannot take the heat.

  • IAnon - 2012-03-14 09:56

    Stay True To Yourselves ...

  • SkylerAlana - 2012-07-11 12:29

I love both Die Antwoord and Lady Gaga. I love both their music and their motives. Die Antwoord wants to stick to what they're doing, and considering the kind of person Lady Gaga is, I'm pretty sure she understood and didn't take it personally. They're both amazing and I love them. <3
