Dutch singer visits Cape school

Cape Town - The Dutch singer Stef Bos on Thursday visited a school in Blue Downs and afterwards went to the informal settlement Happy Valley in an attempt to "better understand coloured culture".

Bos on Thursday morning led a discussion between himself and a couple of pupils at the Tuscany Glen Primary School. He specifically asked the pupils, who were all between the ages of 10 and 13 years, about gang culture.

"I got the idea right there to write a song about gangs because it fascinates me and we had a quick work session".

Pretentious

The group together wrote down the words which were best associated with the gang culture.

Afrikaans words for 'pistol', 'stamp' (tattoos), 'prison', 'knives' and 'murder' were some of the words written down.

Bos planned to return to the school with his guitar so that he and the pupils could write a song that contained the words.

"The pupils should write the lyrics and I'll set it to music. I am a white guy from the Netherlands and it would be pretentious if I tried to write the lyrics."

Brown Cape community

Bos then went with the home carers of the HIV/Aids action group to visit Beatty Green, 50, from Happy Valley in Blackheath.

Green has suffered a stroke and has subsequently been paralysed in her left leg. She was very happy about the visit and chatted merrily with Bos.

Bos will on Friday visit the Dutch consul where he will talk about the transfer of knowledge from Afrikaners and the Afrikaans culture to the Netherlands.

"Many Dutch people know only of white and black South Africans who opposed one another during apartheid, but are not at all aware of the coloured Cape community," he said.

"It is important for the Netherlands to connect to Afrikaans culture, in all its facets."
