EXCLUSIVE: Watch Zonke’s music video premiere for Reach It

Cape Town – SA’s most celebrated female artist, Zonke Dikana, is launching her brand new music video in a Channel24 exclusive.

The video is for Zonke’s first single, Reach It, off her much-anticipated new album, Work of Heart, set to be released on 18 September.

We had quick chat with Zonke from Los Angeles, where she’s currently taking care of some music business.

Check it out here:

Channel24: You’re in Los Angeles at the moment... Tell us a bit about your trip and what you will be doing there?

Zonke: I am in LA at the moment – although this is a brief visit, it is one of several trips to the US I plan to make in the next few months. I have had the opportunity to spend time with family as well as attend to business. While in LA I have also been able to make a turn at The Recording Academy to hand deliver my music in time for Grammy entry. I have a few key meetings scheduled with agents and plan to stop by the Sony office before heading back home to prepare for my album release now scheduled for 18 September 2015.

Channel24: Your job obviously requires a lot of travelling, does it get any easier and what is the one thing you never travel without?

Zonke: I embrace my work and life as they are one and the same. I go where the music takes me. I never travel without a pen and notepad as I always have songs in my head so I need to jot them down as they come.

Channel24: Can you tell us more about your track Reach It, what was the inspiration behind the song and how does it relate to your personal experiences?

Zonke: When I write songs, the lyrics and music come to me and I hear every detail in my head first, so I end up producing my songs to the most minute detail. Reach It is no exception in that it came to me. It is a song about recognising the strength that carries me forward when I can’t go on any more. Listening to the song at different times, depending on the circumstances, I imagine that the song would represent that strength needed to preserver at that time.

Channel24: Can you tell us more about the video for Reach It, what was it like shooting the video and how much input did you have?

Zonke: The music video was a creative collaboration with director Mzi Kumalo – my vision for the music video was to bring my audience into a space where they can appreciate the power of simplicity – specifically in relation to Reach It. There is magic in simplicity and authenticity – both qualities which I value highly along with quality and attention to detail.

Channel24: What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned from being in the music industry?

Zonke: I choose to remain true to my art, to always be myself; and not  be changed by the industry.

Channel24: If you could give one piece of advice to up and coming musos trying to make it, what would it be?

Zonke: Don't stop pursuing your dreams, one day you will ‘Reach It’… you can…
