Hofmeyr parodies Sunday Bloody Sunday

Cape Town - Steve Hofmeyr has thought it good to write his own version of U2’s Sunday Bloody Sunday in an attempt to have the last say about Bono’s remarks.

Hofmeyr became annoyed after Bono, lead singer of U2, said that he believes struggle songs, specifically the controversial ANC Shoot the Boer song, have a place on the musical landscape.

According to Times Live, the Irish singer and political and human rights activist said struggle songs had a place, but should not be sung in public places and a "certain community. It's pretty dumb," he said.

Hofmeyr took this in a very personal way and responded by boycotting U2’s Johannesburg concert by throwing his tickets, worth R5 000, in the Jukskei River.

'Kill the Boer Bono says'

Hofmeyr has replaced the original lyrics of U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday and posted it on his website as follows:

"The Boere father stands and weeps,

"Bodies bleeding at his feet

"Bono used to understand the call

"Kill the Boer Bono says, yes shoot them all"

Times Live reported that Hofmeyr did not respond to emails or interview requests as he had "said everything he wants to say on Twitter", according to his office assistant.

Tweets

Twitter users reportedly had a lot to say, calling Hofmeyr "irrelevant" and "a clown" for his outburst.

Lyndsey Duff tweeted: "There's nothing worse than someone who tweets about it every time they take a dump in a river."

Michelle Mollett said: "Steve Hofmeyr's an ass. Somebody please explain to him what Bono actually said before he embarrasses SA even further."

'Sies vir jou'

On Hofmeyr’s website, below the post of his lyrics, he responded to people calling him an attention-seeker by saying that he "was one of the South Africa's top CD-sellers last year" and that he is "getting more attention than Lady Di".

He also wrote: "One day maybe I'll be seen as someone with legit concerns and no more.

"Before I blame ALL South Africans of idiocratic sing-a-long, may I express my utter amazement at the non-Afrikaner support I am getting from any South African and similar minority victims all over the world.

"Especially black folk understand the pain of what is happening to my people."

According to Times Live, he also urged Bono to revise his "African omniscience" without the help of Wikipedia, which he said, "won't do. You're supposed to be a role model. Sies vir jou."
