Johannesburg - Afrikaans singer Jan Blohm on Saturday missed a performance at a music festival outside Bronkhorstspruit after he was arrested for alleged drunk driving.
Blohm, a self-confessed alcoholic, spent most of Saturday behind bars after he was arrested early that morning.
He reportedly drove into a wall at Waverley in Pretoria Moot, police spokesperson Marinda Swanepoel Austin said on Sunday.
Blohm had to perform at the music festival, Where Blues Meets Rock, on Saturday on the farm Witfontein outside Bronkhorstspruit.
Slightly injured
Blohm's arrest occurred after he was arrested in September last year after complaints that he was drunk in public.
Blohm (real name Jurie Kymdell) had to pay a R300 fine at the Silverton police station.
Zinta Kymdell, Blohm's wife, said her husband sustained minor injuries in the accident. "After being questioned at the Villieria police station, Jan was released on his own recognisance. He was asked to report to the Pretoria Magistrate's Court on June 1 due to the car crash," said Kymdell in a statement.
Warning
Austin-Swanepoel said police found a drunk Blohm at the scene of the accident in Breyer Avenue. Blohm was arrested and taken to a local hospital for a blood alcohol test.
He was locked in a cell at the Villieria police station after which he was released with a warning at 17:00, Austin-Swanepoel said.
Kymdell said the following with regards to Blohm’s arrest: "It's not that we do not want to comment about it, but our version and the facts are in the press release."
Kymdell said Christoph Kotze preformed in Blohm’s place at the festival.
